Olha Stepanian was born and raised in Ukraine, where she currently resides and works. She's been interested in art photography for a long time. In 2010, Stepanian realized she couldn't live without photography and succeeded in making it her full-time career. Olha got her first camera the same year and felt happy for the first time. Stepanian uses her work to depict history, feelings, and, most significantly, elements that people overlook in everyday life.

Olha Stepanian
Olga Stepanian of Cherkasy – a city in central Ukraine – was supposed to be a seamstress but constantly thought of photography. At one point in her life, she decided that she could no longer remain silent. From behind the lens, she tells stories that do not seem to be too influenced by and are not necessarily representative of her cultural setting. “I don’t think my location affects my work much,” she says. Olga likes the fashion and portrait photographer Rodney Smith (born 1947) – famous for his minimalistic and whimsical art, Sally Mann (born 1951) – known for her provocative shots of the naked and the dead and Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) – a pioneer of candid and street photography. These are the figures she tried to study in-depth. She made an effort to understand the thoughts and intentions behind the moments they would capture. Olga’s present portfolio is made up of highly cinematic black and white shots that quietly explore a variety of feelings and situations – loneliness and estrangement, bondage and freedom, restlessness, even gossip. A young girl is suspended limply between two ladders on a barren piece of land. Annoying and frightening human hands emerge from within the cracks of a white wall, urgently wanting to seize and stifle anything within reach. An individual so feels the crushing force of the demands of daily life that they retreat into a cocoon of bandages.

Todo Por La Revolucion
By Steve Schlackman
Located in New York, NY
This digital print is part of a limited edition set.
Steve Schlackman is a lawyer by profession and a photographer by choice. Fascinated by the magical world of photography since his youth, he honed this skill over time, meticulously pouring over all things photographic, technical and creative alike, with unstoppable enthusiasm. Steve’s passion for taking photographs was ignited early on, during a study-abroad trip to Paris, where he immersed himself in all things art historical. Diligence, a strong trait Schlackman is known for, paid off, and after daily meanderings at the Louvre, a great love for art emerged along with hundreds of photographs. These pictures proved to be early tributes to the urban landscape, and although they didn’t amount to full-on series, a seed was planted.
The omnipresent tension between the poor neighborhoods of the Cuban capital, as a result of political dictatorship, and the rich Afro-Cuban cultural roots of their inhabitants, whose wealth is represented by their music and feelings, is physically visible in Steve’s use of high contrast, a metaphoric touch on the subject of the light and darkness of the Afro-Cuban heritage. Although intentionally apolitical, the pictures speak volumes about the Cuban status quo and, appropriately, the eternal joy of living despite socio-political hardship.
Play, in and of itself a mode to survive the harsh reality, represents another subject Steve is keen on capturing. Whether it is adults playing dominoes...
