If France at first seemed spared by the Great Depression, which hit the United States head-on in 1929, this was not the case in the following years: suffering the effects of the devaluation of the pound sterling that occurred in September 1931, the country had to face a fall in prices and a slowdown in agricultural and industrial production, while the budget deficit reappeared. The Crisis took on a different face in France. On the one hand, it manifested itself later because the Archaic structures of the French economy, based on small businesses, and the weakness of foreign investment allowed France to remain sheltered from the doldrums for a while, unlike large industrial countries like the United States, Germany or the United Kingdom which practice large-scale capitalism. On the other hand, instead of causing, as in the United States or Germany, a sudden increase in the number of unemployed and in poverty, the French crisis is reflected as a progressive paralysis of economic activity. Paralysis lasted until 1939 when other countries experienced some recovery. To handle the situation, the administration has implemented four key initiatives: raising protectionist barriers, decreasing imports, controlling agricultural and industrial production to stabilize prices, and safeguarding the economy. Additionally, it supports small businesses and follows a deflationary policy to lower the budget deficit. (Credit: L'Histoire par L'Image website).
