This remarkable photograph preserves a moment in time along one of Paris' most picturesque waterways. Interestingly, the last two images in this collection reveal how the Canal Saint-Martin appears today, offering a fascinating contrast between past and present. Note: The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.6 km (2.86 mi) long canal in Paris, connecting the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine. Over nearly half its length (2,069 meters (2,263 yards), between the Rue du Faubourg du Temple and the Place de la Bastille), it was covered in the mid-19th century to create wide boulevards and public spaces on the surface. The city of Paris's Sanitation department drains and cleans the Canal every 10–15 years. It is always a source of fascination for Parisians to discover curiosities and even some treasures among the hundreds of tons of discarded objects. Gaspard de Chabrol, the prefect of Paris, proposed building a canal from the River Ourcq, 100 km northeast of Paris, to supply the city with fresh water, supporting a growing population and helping to avoid diseases such as dysentery and cholera. The canal also serves as a water source for fountains and street maintenance. Napoleon I ordered the construction of the Canal in 1802. This construction was completed by 1825, funded by a new tax on wine. This Parisian waterway was used to supply Paris with grain, building materials, and other goods, carried on canal boats. Two ports were created on the Canal in Paris for boat loading: Port de l'Arsenal and the Bassin de la Villette. By the 1960s, traffic had dwindled to a trickle, and the Canal narrowly escaped being filled in and paved over for a highway. Today, the Canal is a popular destination for Parisians and tourists. Some take cruises on the Canal in passenger boats. Others watch the barges and other motorboats navigate the sets of locks and passes under the attractive cast-iron footbridges. Many popular restaurants and bars have opened along the outdoor section of the Canal, which students also frequent. (Credit: Wikipedia).
