Rosemary Ellis (1910-1988) Wires Original photography for Windows in the Outlooks and Insights series published by Bodley Head, by Rosemary & Charlotte Ellis. Silver Gelatin Photograph Print 13 x 13cm Rosemary Ellis was well known as a talented photographer, focussing mostly on architectural subjects. Here, in a collaboration with her daughter Charlotte the author, she has taken a series of photographs to illustrate two books for the Bodley Head. These photographs of everyday scenes combine to create a glorious surreal impression, with the everyday items taken out of context and providing strong geometric images. We have a whole series of these photographs, mostly printed at 13 x 13 cm (5” x 5”) or 22 x 20cm (9 x 8”), which we are slowly adding to 1stdibs. Do contact us if you are interested in more of them. ROSEMARY ELLIS (1910-1988) Born in North London in 1910, Rosemary’s father died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1919 and the family moved in with her mother’s parents in the New Forest. This was an environment where she grew to love nature and animals, constant themes in her artistic works. In 1928 she began studying art at the Regent Street Polytechnic, meeting her tutor Clifford Ellis – a mere three years her senior, who was to become her husband and life-long artistic collaborator. They married in 1931 and after this date almost all their freelance work bears both their signatures. They developed a joint cipher, C&RE, which includes their names in alphabetical order, not representing any order of seniority. They produced posters in the 1930s for big clients such as London Transport, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board. Clifford Ellis became head of Bath School of Art, and then served during the Second World War as camoufleur and official war artist – with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary was also an official war artist, working on the Recording Britain project whereby artists were set to record the buildings and landscape of Britain lest it be permanently damaged by the Germans. Following the war Lyons Tearooms chose the Ellises to produce one of their famous lithographs, to be hung in their tearooms and the Ellises chose a view of Teignmouth – we have some views of Teignmouth for sale painted from this time. Their best-known works are probably the epic series of dust jackets for Collins ‘New Naturalists’ series – designing sixty of these dust jackets.

Wander And Get Lost - Contemporary, Polaroid, 21st Century, Landscape
By Julia Beyer
Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Wander And Get Lost - 2016, 40 x 40 cm, edition 2/10, digital C-Print based on a Polaroid, hand-numbered and signed on the back by artist. Not mounted. Artist Statement “Since my childhood days I always loved taking photos, but for unknown reasons instant film never really caught my attention. After I saw the works of a friend who happened to be a gifted Polaroid photographer, I was totally mesmerized and the desire to shoot with instant film constantly grew in me. But for as long as I can think music has always been my main preoccupation. I somehow always feel the need to create, but my focus shifted more and more from making music to instant photography and it grew into something much more fulfilling and pure. Sometimes, these two passions even come together when I am able to provide my photos for album artworks – this makes me incredibly happy. As I always have been very introverted and reclusive I often drift off into my own inner world. The dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres in my work are the visualization and the result of these imaginations. Another influence on my photography is my essential need to travel the world. But I am not interested in documenting the places I see like they are but rather love to create otherworldly scenes by adding the dreamlike texture of instant film, serving me as a needful escape from reality.” Artist Biography Julia Beyer is an analogue photographer from Germany. She mainly works with instant film to express her inner visions that often show dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres. After being more known for her musical endeavors as the singer of the dreampop band Chandeen, she began to delve into this photographic art form in 2014 and since then expands her portfolio continuously. Her work has been published in various international print and online publications. Since 2017, she is a member of the renowned "12:12 Project", a worldwide collective of female Polaroid photographers.
