About the Item

This print is stamped by the photographer's estate. Ruth Orkin was born in Massachussetts but grew up in Hollywood, where her mother was a silent film actress. Orkin was given a camera when she was a child and her first professional assignment as a photojournalist was for The New York Times in 1945. After an assignment for LIFE magazine in 1951, Orkin met Ninalee Craig in Florence and became fast friends with her when it was discovered that they were staying at the same hotel and that they both enjoyed a passion for travel. Orkin proposed a shoot portraying their adventures in Italy, and her photograph of Craig walking down the street as men ogle her became Orkin’s most famous photograph. Although Craig’s facial expression and body language imply discomfort, Craig later publicly claimed that was not the case: “I was thrilled and having the time of my life. I was Beatrice walking through the streets of Florence. I felt that at any moment I might be discovered by Dante himself.” Orkin and Craig remained lifelong friends until Orkin’s death in 1985.
