1984 Silver Gelatin Print 32,2 x 22 cm 51 x 4o cm with frame Stephan Lupino stamp, signed, titled, dated and place “New York, March 1984” Stephan Lupino, pseudonym of Ivan Lepen was born in Varazdin (Croatia) in 1952. He discovered photography in New York in the 1980s with Deborah Turbeville and this immediately became his medium of expression, using mechanical and technological tools to capture the essence of living images. In 1988 he published a photo book titled “The World. 254 E 2nd Street New York City”, with reference to a famous club in NY, opened from 1983 to 1991, where Stephan set up his studio in the women’s bathroom. Many celebrities appear in the book, like Keith Haring, Brooke Shields, Prince, Madonna, Ru Paul, Carolina Herrera, David Bowie, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and Pink Floyd, between others. Lupino collaborated also with magazines like Vogue, Zoom, Europeo and Playboy. Back in Croatia, he realized humanitarian project like a calendar for children with Down’s syndrome and one for children of Sarajevo. During the last years, Lupino dedicated himseld also to design and he realized some short films. His style is clearly visible in the visceral and highly physical executions, which give a power, beauty and dynamism to his art.His work celebrates the broadest spectrum of life and love. His vision captures the essence of life – eroticism – as its basis. Eroticism is the thematic core of all of Lupino’s work. Everything develops from it: every ugliness and beauty; every cryptic attraction and paradox spread from this core. For simplicity, his photographic work can be categorised into the following collections: Vintage, celebrities, male portraits and studies, female portraits and studies. In particular, in this modern picture in black and white, Lupino represents a naked woman from the back, in a provocative pose. She is sitting on a stool covered with a black veil, with the arms raised as if to hold something. Undeniable here is his ability to create an intimate rapport with the subject, capturing her inner feelings – desire, strength, hedonism, insouciance, vulnerability compounded by her state of undress. Natural lighting and a distaste for post-production are evident in this photographic work of art.
