About the Item
Photo-respiration Yura #340, 1998 by Japanese artist Tokihiro Sato is a contemporary abstract photograph signed by the artist. Sato used a large-format camera for a long exposure image that explores time, space, and transience. With a flashlight or a mirror to reflect the sun in daylight, the artist’s use of light trails transforms the black-and-white work into a conceptual piece. The resultant photograph is dreamlike, abstract, and hors du temps (timeless).
An archival pigment print on Hahnemule Fine Art photo rag paper, the 19” x 13” photograph was printed in 2005 under the direction of the photographer. Limited Ed of 100 from the portfolio "Masters of Modern Photography. Japan," Tokyo.

Artist’s Bio:
Tokihiro Sato was born in Yamagata in 1957. He studied sculpture at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Sato made his initial photos by tracing his sculptures with a penlight, creating "light sculptures." Sato’s contemporary photography practice embraces “light painting” or "writing with light." His experiments with light sometimes involve exposures of three hours or longer.
One of Japan's best-known contemporary artists, Sato’s art is widely exhibited around the world. His shows include the Liquid Crystal Futures in Edinburgh (1994); the Havana Biennale (1997); “Presence or Absence: The Photographs of Tokihiro Sato” at the Frist Center in Nashville, Tenn (2010); the Art Institute of Chicago; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Sato's works are in the permanent collections of the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
