Al Satterwhite
Hunter S. Thompson / Cozumel - Color Photograph, Portrait, Beach

1974

About the Item

Hunter S. Thompson / Cozumel by Al Satterwhite is a color portrait of the famous gonzo journalist sitting on the beach, with cigarettes and beer on the ground in front of him. He looks over his shoulder, motioning for one more drink with a cigarette in his other hand. Archival Pigment Print Ed. of 25 Signed and numbered in pen on print margin Titled, dated, print date, and copyright with misc. notations in pencil on print verso *Framing not included “It was a brutal snowing winter when Playboy magazine asked Hunter S. Thompson to be interviewed. Hunter was cold and up to his knees in snow at his Owl Farm in the mountains in Aspen, CO, so of course he said, “Sure, let’s do it in Cozumel!”, an island in the Caribbean. “Call that guy in Florida, Al what’s-his-face, to do the pictures.” Hunter and I had been friends for several years prior. Hunter kept coming to Florida, in his gonzo journalist role, to cover Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States at the time and Hunter’s arch enemy. Hunter would always call me so we could meet up somewhere, usually in Miami, and sometimes in Palm Beach where I lived at the time and we’d be off on some crazy lark. This photo was taken one afternoon after Hunter had finished several hours of interviews on the beach at El President Hotel in Cozumel where we were staying. Hunter was looking forward to heading into town to hit the local bar, Pepe’s, where we would hang out, drink and talk until it was time for dinner. Never without my camera, I kept shooting (not an easy thing to do while you’re drinking with Hunter). Since Hunter and I already had a friendship, he was easy to work with. Hunter being Hunter, the time we spent together was never dull. Considered by some to be a quintessential Hunter shot, this image is in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.” Caption: Hunter Thompson being interviewed for Playboy magazine Al Satterwhite (b. 1944, Biloxi, Mississippi) started working as a photographer at a major daily newspaper in Florida while in high school, covering major news stories in the Southeast. In 1980 he moved to New York City to form his own production company and concentrate on advertising.
