It is a simple but complex composition (if that's possible), and typical of the artist there are only a few elements at play but they are powerfully at play. The hard line geometry of the rows of balconies and their shadows – their arrangement causes slippage in our viewing. They seem to point down but rise up. And inverting the perspective slightly, we're looking at rows of dead-end brick walls. The shadows now a ground.
