Laurina Paperina
Shirin Neshat - Limited edition framed figurative photograph

2008

About the Item

Limited edition framed figurative photograph titled "Shirin Neshat" by Laurina Paperina - Edition 3/3 Laurina Paperina, the artistic alter ego of Laura Scottini, pokes fun at art and life in her morbidly humorous paintings, drawings, installations, sculptures, animations, and photographs. Her series, "Artist’s Face–Balloons," is a playful photographic portrait series that blends human bodies with balloon heads. The project, which includes portraits of Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, Shirin Neshat, and even Paperina herself, creatively interprets each artist based on a combination of appearance and artistic style. Set within a studio, a bedroom, or against a blank wall, each unconventional image features a figure holding up a large balloon face covered with an artist-specific illustration. In the thoughtful collection, Paperina visually conveys personalities by highlighting recognizable details from each artist's career and blending them naturally into unique balloon designs and backgrounds. Much of her work involves witty commentary on current events. However, she does so in a whimsical way because she states: “I don't want to make serious art!” Laurina Paperina has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the USA, and beyond. Her superpower is her ability to create art that ameliorates the abundance of seriousness in the world and makes the viewer smile. Shirin Neshat, photography, contemporary photography, figurative photography, animation, realism, satire, humor, pop culture, pop art, balloon head, female artist, woman, women's history month

Bremen #2 - Black and white figurative drawing on paper
By Andy Mister
Located in East Quogue, NY
Photorealistic black and white drawing of rock concert goers - Graphite on paper by Andy Mister. Offered framed. The work of Andy Mister explores the boundary between mechanical and manual reproduction. Working with images appropriated from vintage photographs and deftly mimicking the Xerox aesthetic of punk zines and album covers, removing their specific historical context. Mister’s drawings question how meaning is created or lost through the act of “copying.” Mister says of the arrangement of his images, “It's something like my bedroom as a teenager, filled with images clipped from magazines: bands or writers that I admired interspersed with random images I found aesthetically interesting. I am interested in the relationship between images and connections that the viewer creates when encountering them, connections that I cannot control.” Andy Mister received a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from Loyola University of New Orleans, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. His artwork has been exhibited at Hirschl & Adler Modern, Turn Gallery, Joshua Liner Gallery, Morgan Lehman Gallery...

A fan of photography since her early childhood, Mizrakli graduated from Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Interior Decoration Department, and continued her higher education in London, where she started out her work as a photographer. Later on, she moved to New York to further develop her career as a photographer and enrolled in classes at the Photography Department of the New York Film Academy. She received a Master’s Degree in photography in Los Angeles, where she is currently based. Mizrakli has conducted many shooting sessions for Mica Studios and Bullet Magazine in New York and had two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles. She has recently participated in the Contemporary Istanbul Exhibition (November 2013). In some of her black and white works she uses the human body only as a pictorial sign in order to create almost abstract works. First made anonymous, the female model is then cloned and circularly multiplied. The result is a kind of wheel in which the repeated human body gives birth to a new, seemingly vegetal or mineral structure. Thus, the human element seems to be transformed into different other natural...
