About the Item

This contemporary, evocative fine art photograph, titled "Espresso, Biscuit. What Else?", was captured by French artist and photographer Natalya Mougenot as part of her ongoing series The Beauty of Simple Things. A delicate still life—featuring a cup of espresso paired with a chocolate biscuit—unfolds on a tranquil beachside scene. Natalya invites the viewer to pause and reflect, offering a sensory moment of serenity in the midst of daily life’s hurried rhythm. She explains, “This photograph is meant to capture a peaceful moment by the sea—savoring a coffee, a biscuit—as if the world itself takes a gentle breath during this pause. It’s in these fleeting rituals that we reclaim time.” In the composition, subtle elements—a sun-soaked parasol, footprints in the sand, the shimmering coastline—whisper reminders of life's quieter joys. These details are not mere decoration; they speak to the importance of slowness, of presence. Natalya reflects, “The parasols, the beach, the scattered details… they are there to remind us how rare and essential it is to find tranquility in our day-to-day. We are always rushing—this is a gentle resistance.” Far from being meticulously staged, Natalya’s photographs emerge from real-life encounters—unposed, spontaneous, and deeply personal. “My work comes from life as it is,” she says. “I want viewers to step into these scenes, to imagine themselves there—in the stillness, in the warmth, in the quiet.” Her guiding philosophy is simple yet profound: “Seize every moment. Seize every instant.” "Espresso, Biscuit... What Else?" also offers a subtle cultural nod—its title playfully referencing the iconic George Clooney catchphrase from Nespresso campaigns. But here, the phrase is reimagined: not as a marketing prompt, but as a rhetorical pause. What else, indeed, could one need in such a moment of still, sunlit indulgence? This artwork masterfully blends the themes of leisure and everyday luxury, transforming a modest seaside coffee into a poetic meditation on simplicity, presence, and joy. It invites us to witness the extraordinary in the ordinary—to savor, observe, and just be. About the Photograph Title: Espresso, Biscuit... What Else? About the artist: Natalya Mougenot, a contemporary artist of Russian descent, was born and raised in Kazakhstan in 1981. She relocated to France in 2003, where she embraced her new home with passion and creativity. While her primary medium is painting, Natalya's artistic journey has naturally extended into photography, a practice she has nurtured since the age of 12. Initially captivated by the instant gratification of Polaroid photography, she has continued to explore the medium, capturing the world through her lens. In her photography, Natalya focuses on the authenticity of everyday moments, avoiding staged scenes and unfamiliar faces. Her work highlights the beauty in simplicity—be it a quiet moment with a cup of coffee, the serenity of a beach walk, or the subtle elegance of daily life. This approach aligns with her broader artistic philosophy, where she seeks to convey emotions and stories through genuine, unembellished visuals. Much like her paintings, Natalya's photographs are imbued with a sense of emotional depth and sincerity. She employs a spontaneous and intuitive process, capturing fleeting moments that resonate with universal themes of connection, introspection, and the human experience. Her photography serves as a visual diary, reflecting her personal journey and inviting viewers to find their own narratives within the images. Through this extension of her artistic practice, Natalya continues to explore the interplay between perception and reality, offering a window into the quiet yet profound moments that define our daily lives. “Photography is an extension of my artistic practice, but I often wonder which came first: photography or art? I believe it was photography that taught me to see the beauty in simple things. When I make pictures, it's firstly an introspection and a visual diary, and also a connection to the world, allowing viewers to project themselves into the scenes I capture.”
