SOREL COHEN (Canadian b. 1936 - ) A graduate of Concordia University, Cohen has been a major figure on the Canadian photography scene for over thirty years. She has been invited as guest lecturer to many Canadian universities, and was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography (1988). Her master’s thesis examined feminist art in the 1970s, while her art practice, which is largely autobiographical, weaves original links conceptual art, photography, painting and film. Cohen creates works that directly reference the historical and social context of the artist, especially through depictions of gender and the body. She has participated in numerous group shows both in Canada and abroad (France, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, etc.) and has had solo exhibitions in major Canadian cities from Halifax to Vancouver, as well as in New York, Marseilles, and Tempe, Arizona. ) She was included in the show She Photographs which presented thirty photographers, mostly Canadian, a few American, who explore the portrait or the self-portrait, nudes, still-life, landscape. She has also been a subject for them; as she puts it, “we are professional posers.” Recently, however, she has worked to paint portraits of those whose gaze is more internal—monks and nomads in Tibet, aboriginal people in Taiwan—creating large bodies of portraits that investigate the limits of the genre. She returned, with her daughter, to Hockney’s studio in 2014, not only to sit for him but to paint him once again. Her practice involves the long sittings and intense looking required of traditional portrait-making. Muse X Editions. An (now defunct) LA based innovative publisher of limited-edition prints, Muse X has launched its first group of prints and is just beginning to make itself known to artists, curators, dealers and collectors.
