About the Item

51 x 63.5" (framed size) Fujicolor chrystal print Edition #3/5. Signed, titled, dated and editioned on label verso. Peter Bialobrzeski spent over two years travelling through Germany, producing his Heimat series. “Heimat” is the German word for “homeland,” but it embodies conflicting tendencies: destiny or coincidence, sentimental kitsch for pensioners and revisionists, and lost paradise or childhood traumas. His Heimat series and the accompanying book were meant to create a fixed image of his “personalized bit of visual and cultural history,” expressing man’s yearning for nature. It poses an homage to German Romanticism and, at the same time, to the works of contemporary American color photographers. Peter Bialobrzeski was born in Wolfburg, Germany, in 1961. He studied photography at the Folkwangschule in Essen and the LCP in London. His work has been exhibited in Europe, the U.S., Asia, Africa and Australia. He has won numerous awards, including the prestigious World Press Photo Award, in 2003 and 2010, and most recently, the Erich Salomon Award from the German Society of Photographers in 2012. Since 2002, he has been a professor of photography at the University of the Arts in Bremen, Germany. Ten monographs of his images have been published, His work has been critically acclaimed both nationally and internationally, and is represented in numerous private, corporate, and museum collections, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, the Nevada Museum of Art, the Martin Margulies collection, and the Andrew and Christine Hall Collection. His work continues to be included in many international venues – in Spring 2016, it was featured in a show at the Center for Architecture in Vienna.

37 x 45.75 inch type-c print Edition 5. Signed on label verso. This peaceful and harmoniously ordered photograph is representative of Yoko Ikeda's personal way of seeing. She is drawn to humble subjects and surroundings, places free of obvious associations, which lend themselves to poetic transformation when seen through her camera. It's notable that the blue retaining wall that ambles across this picture reads as the most aquatic feature—this despite the fact that The Sea of Japan can be glimpsed in a sliver, just over its right side. This gently playful inversion—a cement wall and the sea trading places...
