About the Item

Hake's Drove, British landscape photograph from Richard Heeps series, 36 Minutes in Cambridgeshire. Richard Heeps was awarded a Millennium Year of the Artist Arts Council Grant to make this work. This project was born from an idea to produce a set of photographs that followed the Meridian Line though Cambridgeshire. The images would go through, over and under what ever came in the path of the camera’s lens. This artwork is a limited edition of 25, gloss photographic print, accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. The print will come rolled and we recommend it is professionally framed. We can offer framing at an additional cost. Handmade to order. It is available in other sizes and pairs well with Richard Heeps artworks in our 1stdibs store. The Meridian Line is the zero line of longitude (0°00'). A residency here would be a ‘virtual’ residency – it is, after all, an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole – which would involve people and communities throughout Cambridgeshire, many in isolated locations. As the crow flies, some forty two miles of the Meridian Line runs through Cambridgeshire – from the Royston by-pass (A505) in the south (latitude 52 degrees 03 minutes north) to Cole's Bridge on the Lincolnshire border on the north (52 degrees 39 minutes north). Along the Line there are settlements dating back to the Bronze Age; a Roman causeway and river navigations; Fen drains; the old coaching routes to London and York; wartime defences; railways, and the Fen links roads constructed in the 1970s – all have imposed their indelible mark on the landscape and communities of Cambridgeshire. The Line intercepts all of the county’s major rivers – the Cam, the Great Ouse and the Nene – and the major Fen drains: Vermuden’s Drain (Forty Foot), Fenton Lode (Twenty Foot) and the North Level Drain. It crosses the Cambridge to London railway line, the disused Cambridge–St Ives line and the March to Peterborough line. It intercepts the A505, A10, A603, A428, A14, A141 and the A47. Now heralded as ‘Silicon Fen’, the county will have to cope with being the fastest growing in the country and a population influx of 150,000 people over the next 20 years. This will have to be accommodated with more change. Documenting Cambridgeshire as it is now is an important exercise as the pace of change accelerates. In October 1999, the Year of the Artist residencies were announced and I made my application. In anticipation of success, I began to make preliminary pictures, learning the landscapes around the Meridian Line and discovering the obstacles that I would have to overcome. The residency was confirmed in January 2000 and my proposals to not only make pictures but to host a series of workshops with communities on the Line were underway. The project posed technical challenges and shooting strictly along the Line imposed a discipline upon the compositions. The Meridian Line runs north–south, whereas the sun moves across the sky east–west. The disciplined way of shooting, which I adopted, denied photographing sunrise and sunset directly. There were also difficulties photographing south along the Line because for long periods of the day, especially in winter, you are shooting straight into the sun. I exploited this using any available cloud cover as a kind of large lens hood. The Wisbech & Fenland Museums supported my application and offered me gallery space, as well as their assistance. I have also had the pleasure of working with ADeC and the Babylon Gallery in Ely. As I look at the collection of images, I am very pleased with the result. There was so much enthusiasm around the county for what I was doing from the people whose homes, land or businesses straddled the Line. Working together we were able to pinpoint the correct locations for the photographs. There was a lot of pride, too, that the Line ran across their land. The hardest part of putting the show together has been editing the collection of pictures to the final 37, one for every minute of latitude in Cambridgeshire. Richard Heeps’ seductive, highly saturated colours and sophisticated pictorial structures demonstrate a true love and empathy for his subject matter – be it cool, descriptive interiors, still life, portrait or landscape. His distinctive style pushes the limits of lens-based photography without the need for digital manipulation. He runs his own darkrooms in Cambridge (UK) where he hand prints his colour photography. His work has been exhibited in Museums and Public Galleries around England and he has participated in Art Fairs around the world and his work is now part of many international collections.

In the series 'She Disappeared into Complete Silence' (2014) Mona Kuhn takes a new direction into abstraction. She turns to a highly austere and restrained reductionist geometry and distilled formal purity, connecting the interior to the exterior, the visible to the hidden. These reflections cause one to linger, as they merge to create a dynamic equilibrium of tension, spaces and rythms. Throughout a career spanning more than twenty years, the underlying theme of her work is her reflection on humanity’s longing for spiritual connection and solidarity. As she solidified her photographic style, Kuhn created a notable approach to the nude by developing friendships with her subjects, and employing a range of playful visual strategies that use natural light and minimalist settings to evoke a sublime sense of comfort between the human figure and its environment. Her work is natural, restful, and a reinterpretation of the nude in the canon of contemporary art. For the past two decades, the Los-Angeles based artist's works have been shown steadily, revealing an astonishing consistency in technique, of subject and of purpose. In 2001, Kuhn’s photographs were first seen by an influential audience during the exhibition at Charles Cowles Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Kuhn’s distinct aesthetic has propelled her as one of the most collectible contemporary art photographers—her work is in private and public collections worldwide and she is represented by galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Mona Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004; followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (2018/19). In addition, Stanley/Barker Editions published Kuhn's Bushes and Succulents (2018) with a debut at Musee Jeu de Paume in Paris in 2019. Thames & Hudson published a career retrospective titled Works. Kuhn's most recent publication Kings Road with Steidl accompanies a multi-dimensional museum exhibition in Germany and the US. Mona Kuhn’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The J. Paul Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, the Perez Art Museum in Miami, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Kiyosato Museum in Japan. Kuhn's work has been exhibited at The Louvre Museum and Le Bal in Paris, The Whitechapel Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts in London, Musée de l’Elysée in Switzerland, Leopold Museum in Vienna Austria, The Polygon Gallery in Vancouver Canada, Australian Centre for Photography and Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan.
