Sam Durant photographed this rear view of a church designed by architect R.M. Schindler.
The Bethlehem Baptist Church in Los Angeles was designed by architect R.M. Schindler, and built in 1944. Located in the Central-Alameda district of Los Angeles on the corner of Compton Avenue and 49th Street, it is the only example of a church designed by Schindler, and "the lone example of Modernist architecture to cross Los Angeles economic and racial boundaries in the era of Jim Crow housing covenants".
R.M. Schindler Church (rear) was Sam Durant's contribution to the "100 Artists See God" exhibition curated by John Baldessari and Meg Cranston. Organized by Independent Curators International, this touring exhibition was shown at The Jewish Museum San Francisco (March 7 to June 27, 2004), the Laguna Art Museum (August 1 to October 3, 2004), the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) London (November 19, 2004 to January 9, 2005), the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (July 10 to October 2, 2005), the Freedman Art Gallery of Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania (September 29, 2005 to January 8, 2006), and the Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, Tennessee (February 4 to April 16, 2006).
Signed in wide-tipped silver marker "SAM DURANT" and titled "R.M. SCHINDLE [sic] CHURCH (REAR)" on the frame backing board.
