About the Item
Wildfire #32, Witch Creek Fire, Rancho Bernardo, CA, 2007 (25"x30") Edition 9 + 3 artist prints, signed by the artist, Sasha Bezzubov
The photographs in the Wildfire series were made in California from 2003 to 2007. The work began as part of a larger project titled Things Fall Apart (2001-2008), which took me to different parts of the world to make landscape photographs in the aftermath of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. Wildfire was published by Nazraeli Press in 2009 with an introduction by the writer and environmental activist Bill McKibben.
Every fall California burns. These wildfires can no longer be called a “natural disaster”. Each season, these fires are more and more difficult to fight. Over-development in California is so rampant that the only sound solution - to let the fires burn themselves out – is unfeasible. Human-caused global warming is rendering the fire season longer each year. The longer fire season means that the wood becomes dryer, which makes it ready to ignite from the hundreds of thunderstorms that scan the American terrain every day. Add to this tinderbox the proximity of man with our campfires, grills, automobiles, atvs, and the occasional pyromaniac and you have an environment where human habitation and that which threatens it, coexist in a state of chronic catastrophe.
It is this landscape that Wildfire attempts to describe. A landscape of charred ruins equally frightening and beautiful. A landscape that we humans have created following our desires to live in the mountains, forests, canyons - to be closer to nature. And a landscape that is not only contemporary, but a landscape of the future. A future that we will dwell in with a much less cooperative nature.
Photography plays a remarkable role in this. It was in big measure thanks to photographic representation that the West was so appetizingly packaged and so quickly settled. The great 19th century American landscape photographers and the geological surveys that employed them utilized the power of the photograph (under the guise and with assistance of scientific exploration) to sell the land. The implication that ran through these powerful images of vast stretches of terrain, new rail lines, mountains and valleys and streams inhabited sparsely (if at all) by subjugated natives - was “come and settle”. In Wildfire I attempt to both pay tribute to those earlier photographs, but also to bring them and the landscape they helped to fashion into question.
Sasha Bezzubov’s photographic approach has developed through diverse series that address the contemporary condition and explore the nature of the document. Working both solo and with his sometime collaborator Jessica Sucher, Sasha Bezzubov uses a large format camera to photograph the people and the land in diverse series including, The Gringo Project, Expats and Natives, Things Fall Apart, The Searchers, Albedo Zone, Facts on the Ground and most recently, Republic of Dust.
Bezzubov is a two-time recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship Award. His work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions including International Biennial of Photography and Visual Arts (Liege, Belgium); Tucson Museum of Art; Museum Belvedere (The Netherlands); Herter Art Gallery (University of Massachusetts); Wavehill (New York); New Orleans Museum of Art; and Noorderlicht Photography Festival (The Netherlands). In 2009 Nazraelli Press published Bezzubov’s monograph Wildfire (introduction by Bill McKibben). In 2011 Daniel Cooney Fine Arts published Facts on the Ground (introduction by Lucy Lippard) to accompany the exhibition. His work is in permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Joy of Giving Something Foundation. Bezzubov’s work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, The Telegraph Magazine, Esquire, Newsweek, Time, Art & Auction, and Details; and has received critical acclaim in The New Yorker, Freeze, The Village Voice, The Brooklyn Rail and Print. In 2012, The Sylvia Bongo Foundation invited Sasha Bezzubov to Gabon, Central Africa. Republic of Dust, the series of photographs that resulted from this experience was exhibited at Front Room Gallery (NY) in 2015.

Phillip Buehler has been photographing abandoned places around the world since he rowed to the (then abandoned) Ellis Island in 1974. Many, like Greystone Park Hospital, have since been demolished; some, like Ellis Island and the High Line, have been restored, and some, like the S.S. United States and the New York State Pavilion, are now in jeopardy. Photographs from the (now demolished) Greystone Park Hospital are featured in this exhibition and in the book "Wardy Forty" which he wrote in 2013 about the last days of Woody Guthrie.
