About the Item
This is a historical photograph of Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy, taken in the 1950s. The image captures a lively city scene with numerous vintage cars parked around the square and people walking through the area. The architectural beauty of Florence is evident, with its characteristic ochre-colored buildings, shuttered windows, and Renaissance-style facades.
In the foreground, the famous equestrian statue of Cosimo I de' Medici, created by Giambologna, stands prominently in the square. Nearby, the Fountain of Neptune, designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati, is visible with its large marble statues. On the right edge of the image, part of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s town hall, can be seen with its medieval stone walls and ornate windows.
In the background, the city's skyline is dominated by the elegant bell towers of Florence. Among them, the slender and ornate Campanile di Badia Fiorentina stands out with its distinctive Gothic design. Beyond the city, rolling Tuscan hills stretch into the horizon, bathed in soft sunlight.
The overall atmosphere of the photo exudes a charming, nostalgic feel, showcasing Florence as a bustling yet historically rich city during the post-war period. The combination of Renaissance architecture, historic statues, and 1950s automobiles creates a fascinating contrast between past and modernity.
In 2021, a gallery from Brussels contacted us. There, a photographic collection had been kept in tin boxes for decades, consisting of 6x6 glass slides in color.
The collection shows the worldwide travels of a then presumably very wealthy family from Belgium and was created in the 1950s and 1960s. The name of the creator of these works is unknown.
We purchased the collection and are carefully curating the holdings to find outstanding period photographs within for high quality limited edition prints and large formats - for rooms made for people, with windows into the past.
The print is new, limited to a maximum of 50 copies, created on Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl. To keep shipping costs low, the work comes to you rolled in a special box.
