In Conga, Alison Jackson cleverly blurs the line between reality and illusion by using doppelgängers to create a faux paparazzi photograph of the British royal family engaging in a festive conga line at an opulent party. The image, filled with vibrant colors and soft lighting, captures the look-alikes of recognizable figures in an unusually candid and playful moment, juxtaposing their typically formal public personas. The lavish setting, complete with chandeliers and elegant decor, heightens the surreal, almost absurd quality of the scene. Jackson’s use of staged doubles and deepfake-like imagery comments on society’s obsession with celebrity culture and the desire to witness private moments that may never truly exist. Through Conga, she invites viewers to question what is real and what is fabricated, offering a satirical take on the voyeuristic lens through which we view public figures.
The late queen reading on the toilet, Marilyn cuddling up with JFK, or Diana flipping off the camera – Alison Jackson’s photographs let us in on intimate scenes of the ultra-famous. Using look-alikes and the grainy texture of paparazzi shots, her works are mental images of a culture obsessed with wealth and celebrity. The British star photographer continually takes the pulse of our time, from politicians to starlets and the Royal Family, a recurring favorite. Both voyeuristic and satirizing, Jackson creates pretend worlds in which we, the viewer, sit front-row on the mundane everyday of those deemed exceptional.
