"Something And/Or Nothing? - Square" is a figurative landscape photograph with hues of green, yellow, and black. Born in Philadelphia, Andrew Herzog is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer currently working in New York City. Herzog creates a variety of works that explore the relationship between the viewer and the artist with themes of accessibility and prioritized sight, often taking the form of photographs, books, films, site-specific sculptures and interactive performances, objects and drawings. Herzog defines “prioritized sight” as how we choose, consciously or unconsciously, the things we see; what we engage or empathize with; and what we understand or misinterpret, with varying degrees of implication. Herzog received an MA in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He was the co-founder and partner at the design and technology studio HAWRAF, and led projects at the Google Creative Lab focusing on AI, creative tools and accessibility. Also, Herzog is adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Herzog has lectured and exhibited works at the A4 Art Museum, Chengdu, Sichuan, China; The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA; Q21 MuseumsQuartier Wien, Vienna, Austria; and The National Museum of Art of Romania; among others. Patrick Beaulieu’s most recent project Révélations uses installation and digital prints to explore how artistic manipulation can create shifts in one’s expectations of the visual experience. Beaulieu clearly acknowledges his artistic presence in the work through mechanical and digital manipulation of the objects and images he presents. He becomes more than a passive observer and recorder of his physical world; the alteration of conventional photographs implants his voice and vision into the work. This approach directly addresses and contrasts artistic practices which seek to conceal the artist’s hand. His method diverges from those that attempt to present an uninterrupted and uncontaminated record, such as some documentary and straight photography. In using these stylized techniques, Beaulieu makes a palpable proclamation regarding the subjective and flexible condition of images. In Révélations, images of trees, moss, leaves and other natural objects are presented in strict colour schemes of muted grays, browns and greens.
