About the Item

Best known for his porcelain sculpture, Charles Birnbaum has recently begun showing his photography . Charles Birnbaum's photography points to the possibility of going beyond objective reality. The images take on the character of apparitions leading reminiscent feelings and desires to find traces of a transient presence. Charles Birnbaum graduated Kansas City Art Institute as one of a select group of Ken Ferguson’s “ceramic stars”—artists who questioned the cultural premises and constraints of “craft” by producing postmodern interpretations of ancient Asian forms. After his graduate work at Tyler School of Art, he started sealing, altering and re-contextualized his vessels; eventually began creating abstract porcelain sculptures. What hasn’t changed, however, is Birnbaum's fascination with the visual and narrative power of pattern and form. Today, he lives and work in New York City, creating one-of-a-kind gallery and commissioned pieces. Birnbaum's photographs explore the liminal space between clarity and ambiguity, a boundless transcendent essence that is both settled and unfathomable. His goal is to raise unresolved questions leading the viewer to closely examine the images and attempt to discern the indeterminate; to find that detail that leaps out and pricks the viewer with a strange and often inexplicable emotion.
