A fan of photography since her early childhood, Mizrakli graduated from Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Interior Decoration Department, and continued her higher education in London, where she started out her work as a photographer. Later on, she moved to New York to further develop her career as a photographer and enrolled in classes at the Photography Department of the New York Film Academy. She received a Master’s Degree in photography in Los Angeles, where she is currently based. Mizrakli has conducted many shooting sessions for Mica Studios and Bullet Magazine in New York and had two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles. About this series: With great patience and respect, the photographer observes the life cycle of the flower, viewing the subject much like a portrait photographer views a person, choosing the particular instance which in his view represents the essence of the flower. We feel the piece evokes a certain poetic, quiet, Zen beauty. The photographer was a London Central Saint Martins graduate and lived in a short spell in a monastery in Japan, and now primarily lives in Japan. ----- The artist was born in the UK in 1971, and after leaving Central Saint Martin’s in London in 1992, determined to explore a deeper sense of meaning, and contemplate life, he journeyed to Japan where he lived in a Zen Buddhist monastery and lived and studied in a temple in the mountains of Yamanashi for months, during which he studied Zen Buddhism and joined the monks in their daily prayers and routines. Over time, the subject matter for this series is borne out of a respect of the inner life of living things, Nature, in this instance and a sense of “mono no aware” (the art of impermanence). His artist vision has drawn influences from his Western artistic culture, Japanese classical aesthetics, and the 1933 classical text, “In Praise of Shadows” by Japanese literary titan, Junichiro Tanizaki (1886–1965). Tanizaki, as translated by scholars, examines the singular standards of Japanese aesthetics and their stark contrast with the value systems of the industrialized West. He writes: “We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates… Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.” “Shadows” presumably refers to the subtle interplay between light and darkness, not a stark dualism between black and white. Hence, the quiet beauty expressed in shadows of light and darkness as a living flower moves through the passage of life. The art of impermanence refers to a “pathos” (aware) of “things” (mono), deriving from their transience. The flower is a perfect metaphor for the expression of impermanence and beauty. Each flower has its own distinctive character and temperament, and is in constant dynamic motion. Through the passage of its life, it blossoms to its greatest peak, turning always towards the light until they eventually give up their petals. The artist documents this process through hundreds of images over time, essentially capturing the essence of the life of the subject. Both the visual aesthetic and process of his art calls to mind the transcient nature of things and reminds us to rejoice what we do have. In his gold series - Gold, in turn associated with the sacred, the divine, with supernatural powers and even immortality, has been recognized since ancient times in all the great civilizations as a noble material. Gold leaves have been used to decorate shrines, temples, statues, armor, jewelry since ancient times. At different times of the day, the light reflects off the gold differently as the day progresses, providing a visual context in which the celebration of life was captured. The artist has been recognized for his work for example, with a merit award at the Art Directors Club 87th Annual Awards N.Y. (2008). Patrick Lichfield (1939-2005) Officially Thomas Patrick John Anson, 5th Earl of Lichfield Boy Wearing a Palestinian Keffiyeh, c. 1960 Gelatin silver print 38 x 29.1 cm. Provenance: Patrick Lichfield, who gifted to Hugh Myddelton Biddulph (1995-2021); Passed to Gaia Servadio (1938-2021); By descent to Orlando Mostyn-Owen (b. 1973); Private Collection, United Kingdom. This charming portrait expresses a moment of universal tenderness, the young boy grinning with a charismatic ease, his eyes lit with recent laughter. A cultural insight is provided by the Palestinian keffiyeh which he wears loosely around his head, a traditional and deeply sybmolic headdress worn in arid regions of the Middle East. Prior to the 1930s, keffiyeh were worn by rural workers, whereas city residents and the educated elite wore the Ottoman tarbush (or fez). However, during the 1936-39 Arab revolt in Palestine, rebel commanders ordered all Arabs to wear the keffiyeh. The black and white design as seen in the present photograph was popularised in the 1950s, after Sir John Bagot Glubb wanted to distinguish his Palestinian soldiers from the Jordanians (whose keffiyeh were red and white). The alternating pattern represents economically and culturally significant olive leaves, while the fish net motif symbolises fishing and the sea. The photograph is one taken by Lichfield on a visit to the Empty Quarter with his lifelong friend Hugh Myddelton Biddulph, of Chirk Castle, Wales. The sand desert encompasses most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula, and the visit was one of Lichfield’s earliest to the Middle East, which he would revisit throughout his career (particularly Dubai). The pair travelled through the region on a Mini Moke, carrying basic supplies and sleeping in a teepee. The photograph was left after Myddelton’s death to his second wife Gaia Servadio, the eccentric Italian journalist, writer, and first mother-in-law to Boris Johnson. After her death in 2021, it passed to her artist son Orlando Mostyn-Owen, and later into a private British collection. Patrick Lichfield was born in 1939, the son of Thomas Anson, Viscount Anson, and Anne Bowes-Lyon, later Princess Anne of Denmark. After seven years in the Grenadier Guards, Lichfield began his career as a photographer’s assistant in 1962 to Kasterine and Michael Wallis, after which he earned a five-year contract with American Vogue; he benefited greatly from his access to the royal family, since Queen Elizabeth was his maternal first cousin. In 1981 he took the official photograph for the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
