Joachim Schmeisser: Portraitist of Endangered Wildlife Joachim Schmeisser is an acclaimed German photographer best known for his deeply emotional and intimate portraits of endangered African animals. His work stands out for its profound sense of empathy, often capturing the inner essence of animals—particularly orphaned elephants—with a style that blurs the line between wildlife and portrait photography. Using medium-format and large-format cameras, Schmeisser avoids telephoto lenses, choosing instead to get physically close to his subjects. This approach creates powerful eye-level images that convey a striking sense of presence and connection. Many of his photographs are rendered in rich black-and-white, using platinum and palladium print processes, though he occasionally introduces dramatic color. One of his most celebrated projects is “Elephants in Heaven” (2017), a photo series and book focused on orphaned elephants cared for by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. Schmeisser documented their journey from trauma to recovery, capturing their individuality, vulnerability, and resilience. These images offer not only beauty but a deeply human narrative of healing and hope. In “The Last of Their Kind” (2021), Schmeisser expanded his focus to include other iconic African species on the brink of extinction—rhinos, lions, giraffes, cheetahs, and mountain gorillas. The collection comprises over 100 black-and-white portraits that serve as both tribute and urgent call for conservation. Schmeisser’s work has received international recognition, including the Hasselblad Masters Award in 2012. But beyond accolades, his photography is driven by a mission: to raise awareness about habitat loss, poaching, and the fragility of biodiversity. By presenting animals as individuals—dignified, soulful, and deserving—he invites viewers to see them not just as symbols of a vanishing world, but as equals sharing the same planet. In his own words, Schmeisser aims to go beyond the spectacular to reveal what lies beneath the surface. His photographs are not just visual documents—they are quiet, powerful stories that ask us to look again, and to care.
