About the Item
JOHN Yuyi (*1991, Taiwan)
The Face 2, 2016
Archival Pigment Print
Sheet 90 x 60 cm (36 x 24 in.)
Edition of 6, plus 2 AP; Ed. no. 1/6
John Yuyi (*1991, Taiwan) is known worldwide as an interdisciplinary voice of her generation in art, fashion, and social media. The millennial-speak depictions of the female body and her aptitude for collecting, wielding, and reflecting on social media influence are recurring in her practice. She uses temporary tattoos to generate visual manifestos, while the body becomes a performative screen to present them. In addition, Yuyi exploits the iconography of mass media by utilizing her own body to project the images upon, which also reflect the self and the economics of identity.
In a series of ongoing investigations into the intersections between the physical and technological worlds, Yuyi explores our addiction to social media and the marks it leaves on our lives. The fact that attention has become the most important currency is also evident in the artist's collaboration with prestigious brands, whose logos she ‘tattoos’ on her skin before posting her self-portraits as advertisements on Instagram. In this way, the Taiwanese artist shows how the body has become a vehicle for media attention on social networks. At the same time, she demonstrates how our bodies are occupied by these very platforms. They influence how we present and perceive ourselves - and determine the value we give ourselves.
Yuyi, now based in New York City, received her BFA in Fashion Design from Shih Chien University in 2013. Yuyi’s work has been exhibited both in the US and internationally, including in ‘The Artist Is Online’, König Galerie, Berlin (2021); ‘Global Gallery’, König Galerie, Berlin (2021); ‘Manifest of freedom’ 193 Gallery, Paris (2020); ‘Eye See No Lashes’ Tao Art, Taipei (2021); Taipei Dangdai, Taipei (2019); The Art Vacancy, New York (2018); My(temporary)self, Los Angeles (2018); ‘John Yuyi’, Shanghai (2018); More Than A Gallery, Paris (2016); Off Topic, Taipei (2016), Watermark, Los Angeles (2016), and in Sydney. Most recently she was exhibited at Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland in 2021 as part of the exhibition ‘How to Win at Photography – Image-Making as Play’ along with artists such as Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and Ai Weiwei. Currently she is exhibited in the ‘Fundación Foto Colectania’ in Barcelona together with Roni Horn and Thomas Ruff amongst others.
She was recognised by Forbes magazine in the ‘30 under 30 Asia 2018 - The Arts’ category. Furthermore, Yuyi worked on international projects with Gucci, Kenzo, Burberry, and Maison Margiela, among other brands, and has been profiled by i-D, Office, NYLON, Dazed, Bullett, the BBC, and The New York Times.

Coming Back - underwater photograph - archival pigment print 23x17"
By Alex Sher
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
"Coming Back" captures a transformative moment in contemporary underwater fine art photography, where classical composition meets avant-garde expression. A figure in crimson emerges through a veil of ascending bubbles, creating a dynamic interplay between motion and stillness. The deep cerulean backdrop contrasts dramatically with the red fabric, while suspended air bubbles catch light like countless stars, evoking a celestial aesthetic. This fine art photograph explores themes of emergence and rebirth, characteristic of modern submersible portraiture. The technical mastery of underwater lighting and movement choreography elevates this piece to a meditation on human resilience and ascension.
This photograph is a part of the series "Blue Fall...

Pointe - underwater photograph - archival pigment print 24x17"
By Alex Sher
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
This elegant underwater photograph captures a ballet dancer in pointe shoes and flowing white tutu, suspended in deep teal waters. The rich contrast between the pristine white costume and the moody blue-green aquatic environment creates a dreamlike atmosphere. Sher's composition bridges classical dance and contemporary underwater photography, exploring themes of grace transcending physical boundaries. The work continues the tradition of fine art photography that documents performance art in unexpected contexts, transforming the familiar ballet pose into a surreal meditation on weightlessness and artistic expression beneath the surface.
"Four years ago I wrecked my sailboat and was selfmedicating with vodka at a Russian restaurant when I suddenly noticed a cute girl hanging from the ceiling right above my glass. She was not only beautiful, she was a dancer too, and she agreed to model for me underwater.
Two days later, if you stopped by my pool you’d see a fully dressed ballerina with her hands underwater and me wriggling at the bottom around her dance e shoes. I kept asking her to tie and untie her pointe hypnotized by the small hands entwined in ribbons and light. I took quite a few pictures that day. This one is my favorite." Alex Sher

Artist's poem on "Traveling"
I think of my heart and what it loves,
of blood flowing in my veins,
my life buried under the snow of absence,
loss that tastes of a city,
an extension of the map
burning itself,
the map of childhood drawing figures
on torn paper,
destroyed walls and charred furniture...
