About the Item

Edition of 3 Mounted on Plexiglas Framed Kai Schäfer is an acclaimed German photographer with a passion for vinyl records and iconic turntables. The World Records series celebrates some of the very best and most distinctive albums in music history, each one beautifully captured on an iconic turntable. Prices are for mounted works in Plexiglas (DIASEC). In his series "World Records" Schaefer draws from Rolling Stone Magazine's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time," photographing the original vinyl pressings of iconic record albums throughout music history on the turntables they would have first been played on. Now numbering over 100 images, "World Records" moves through pop chart legends with Rock 'n' Roll icons like AC/DC, David Bowie and Pink Floyd; heart throbs like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash to more experimental pioneers like The Velvet Underground and Kraftwerk. Parallel to the methodical nature of this work is the idea that music can sustain and resonate with our individual experiences through listening. This notion of music's ability to sway our emotions and jolt our memories is universally familiar, although subjective. The same song can take someone back to the memory of a kiss, to another a goodbye or someone else longing for their youth. As "World Records" methodically catalogs an era when the experience of listening was more physical and tactile, it is also contemporary with the resurgence of audiophiles elevation of the vinyl pressings as art objects. Schaefer pays tribute to these unforgettable analog sounds and aural experiences highlighting each groove, label and tone arm so these images become tangible - subtly audible in their nostalgia.
