Ode to Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe
Located in New Orleans, LA
12 x 16 inches - Edition 3 of 7 with 2 APs Shot in 2011 in New Orleans and Amsterdam Inspired by Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, 1863 Photography and acting are kindred spirits in the new series by e2 (Elizabeth Kleinveld and Epaul Julien). Their current photographic project, In Empathy We Trust, presents viewers with re-imagined iconic images from the history of art. The collaborators re-envisioned the work of old master painters beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years. With subjects enacting roles with varied representations of race, age, and sexual orientation, e2 “remakes with a twist” works by artists such as van Eyck, Rafael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, and Manet. Inspired by the original paintings, e2 hopes to “jar viewers” into questioning their own perceptions. They invite viewers to see these images, and indeed the world anew, using humor, wit and playfulness. In addition they hope that the viewers will see how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination. The collaboration began in 2010, after completing work on the traveling exhibition and book project Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. This natural and man-made disaster brought social inequities in Louisiana into vivid focus. Conversations between Kleinveld and Julien revealed their mutual interest in issues of social justice. Accompanying e2’s series is its own coat of arms, bringing new meaning to the traditional symbol of the aristocracy. Heralded with pelicans and a fleur de lis, the shield reflects the artists’ Louisiana roots. It also features their motto: In Empathy We Trust, which reflects the core values of e2’s work. The artists believe in the power of empathy...

Angel in Dior, Les Caves at Maxim's
Located in New York, NY
Angel in Dior, Les Caves at Maxim's 1957 Archival pigment print Estate stamped, signed and numbered by Andrea Derujinsky with certificate of authenticity Groundbreaking fashion photographer Gleb Derujinsky invigorated the fashion industry with his glamorous, exotic, and often unconventional photographs. Gleb Derujinsky's career as a fashion photographer took hold in the golden age of European haute couture, when Balenciaga and Pierre Balmain were at the top of their game and Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld were designing their first runway shows. Although air travel was still reserved for the happy few, Derujinsky convinced his editors Carmel Snow and Diana Vreeland to send him around the world to photograph beautiful models like Carmen Dell Orefice and his future wife, Ruth Neumann draped in expensive gowns juxtaposed against rough desert dunes or a glittering ocean at sunset. His ideas were revolutionary and they gave rise to the mystique and glamour that is now pervasive in fashion. Derujinsky was the quintessential Renaissance man photographer, award-winning cinematographer and commercial director, inventor, WWII veteran, world traveler, jewelry designer, musician, ski instructor, Ferrari America race-car driver, and champion glider pilot. His passion for photography started at the tender age of six, by ten, he had built a photo enlarger, and as a teenager, he became the youngest member of the Camera Club of New York. His photographs appeared in major lifestyle magazines and extensively in Harper's Bazaar from 1950 to 1970 Derujinsky’s best fashion photographs are typified by the frisson between high fashion in the 1950s and 1960s with the dynamism of locations and urban scenarios." Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 20 CURRENT EXHIBITION - runs through May 6, 2018. Any framed photographs purchased during the show will be after May 6. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current exhibition of the photograph. ABOUT The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present “episodes (without a real order)”, the first solo photographic exhibition by Leonardo Pucci. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, March 21st from 6pm to 8pm. The show will run through May 6th, 2018. The delicate sensuality and voyeuristic feeling in Leonardo Pucci’s work allows his photographs to act as indefinite episodes, stolen moments in the lives of individuals or couples caught unaware. But the narrative Pucci is most interested in, is the stories his photographs elicit from the piece’s observers rather than the story of his subjects themselves. Shot mostly at dusk or at night, Pucci’s imagery creates a vague tension in his observer: “the idea that you are looking at something you shouldn’t be seeing provokes a feeling of curiosity and emotion, paired with a subtle discomfort or shame”. “However, this turmoil is temporary as the observer’s personal memories take over in the desire to have his/her own story told. Through the artist’s use of strong geometric compositions and his almost three-dimensional contrasting colors, the photographs reveal moments that are usually secretive and hidden eliminating the distance between the observer and the subject. The exhibition’s invitational image “Paris 9:33am” demonstrates Pucci’s synthesis of composition, color, and narrative. In essence, the fine and detailed arrangement of Pucci’s subjects and their environment - the placement and color of a distant window and the stranger therein create a theater in which the observer can play out their own dreams and impressions. Describing his episodes, which have been installed against a dark grey wall, Pucci states, “They are crystallized instants and therefore appear strangely like a canvas that everyone recognizes, adding their own meanings, tales and emotions which go beyond the image itself.” Leonardo Pucci is a self-taught photographer born in Pisa, Italy. He is currently living between Paris and Rome. He was able to nourish his eye for beauty and narrative through his work in fashion at Italian and French “Maisons”, supervising creative and development processes. Leonardo Pucci links his first memories of photography to his father, who would record every moment of their family life. Among his influences, Pucci lists Franco Fontana, Saul Leiter, Merry Alpern, and Philip-Lorca di Corcia. Color, Paris, Men, Architecture, Voyeur, Male...

Located in Chicago, IL
Art Shay Gale Sayers #40, 1966 archival pigment print 20.25 x 24.25 framed 3/3 ASY028 “Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.” Roger Ebert “[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.” Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors “I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?” Russell Banks, Novelist “The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.” Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris “Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.” Arthur Siegel...

Carmen and the Cathedral, Notre Dame, Paris
Located in New York, NY
Carmen and the Cathedral, Notre Dame, Paris 1957 Archival pigment print Edition of 5 Estate stamped, signed and numbered by Andrea Derujinsky with certificate of authenticity The entire Gleb Derujinsky Collection available exclusively at IFAC Arts on 1stdibs. Groundbreaking fashion photographer Gleb Derujinsky invigorated the fashion industry with his glamorous, exotic, and often unconventional photographs. His photographs appeared in major lifestyle magazines and extensively in Harper's Bazaar from 1950 to 1970 Derujinsky’s best fashion photographs are typified by the frisson between high fashion in the 1950s and 1960s with the dynamism of locations and urban scenarios."
