Mitchell Funk
Elephant Close Up at Sunset with Wide Angle Lens, Life Magazine

1980

About the Item

This elephant portrait was done on assignment for Life Magazine. It was for a story about a group of three elephants who stomped to death their trainer. In an attempt to save the elephant's life, a new trainer rehabilitates the elephant's behavior. The three elephants were transported from the Pacific Northwest to a location outside of Tampico, Mexico. Life Magazine sent Photographer Mitchell Funk, and his trusted assistant ( yours truly ) to photograph the three elephants being transformed from being out of control to being cooperative. The result yielded one of the great elephant images ever created. 42 years after it's creation, the image stands the test of time. By getting extremely close and within inches of the tusked leviathan, Funk used a wide-angle lens that yields an unexpected, intimate and highly individualized portrait that conceals the subject's past narrative. Signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, other sizes available, unframed, printed later. This work is printed on fine art Hahnemuhle paper. The color will vary from monitor to monitor. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time-Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum.
