Ron Hamad's second solo exhibit at Robin Rice Gallery invites us to contemplate the cycle of life in a new way. Inspired by his own recent near death experience, Hamad set out to capture the beauty that exists in a world that continually ebbs between permanence and impermanence. This new collection of landscapes, still lives and figurative studies expresses what happens when one surrenders their own fear of death and embraces life.
The realization that nature is where he gets the “strongest sense of the divine” led him to the myriad plateaus of New Mexico and open vistas of California to free himself from the everyday and explore the duality of life without filters.
In “The Meeting”, the invitational image, the land is at once the foundation and the canvas. A woman in serpentine repose kneels in tumbleweed while a mountain rises behind her in the distance. The composition draws a graceful line between heaven and earth with her sensual movement and ethereal white flowing gown. In her act of bowing to the earth she is at once vulnerable and strong. The camera captures the moment of accepting death enveloped by a sense of calm while portraying an awakening to the beauty that surrounds us.
In “Passageway”, what appears as a mystical key to the heavens invites us to contemplate the passageway between light and dark—what is on the other side? The close up of what is literally a cross-shaped window found in ancient Adobe structures with light pouring through it has a temporal quality. The viewer is transported to a place where time is held aloft. The image is surrounded by a cloudy veil of light, creating a metaphor for the gray matter we pass through in our everyday lives.
This effect was created by the unique chemistry process used in lith printing which produces exquisite, variable hues from rich chocolate brown to stronger, more definite tones. Hamad is one of the few artists using this heritage-rich method due to its complexity. The subtle, delicate shifts of color are a function of the level of exposure, choice of paper and age of the chemicals. Each print requires several attempts, making the process as much a work of art as the end result.
Ron Hamad launched his photography career in 2002 with gallery shows in Los Angeles, Tokyo and New York City. A long-time award-winning commercial film director, Ron Hamad is known for his arresting cinematic flair and visual storytelling. Fine art photography was a natural extension of these talents. Hamad weaves absorbing images into the fabric of each piece with highly evocative art direction. One of the most sought after commercial directors working today, his clients range from the Mayo Clinic to Motorola.

A NEW COLLABORATION
Tina West + Tucker Robbins 2020
The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Tina West, featuring a special new collaboration between Robin Rice and furniture designer, activist Tucker Robbins. Jessica Kravitz of Exalted Alchemy created an aromatic experience exclusively for the exhibition. The installation was designed by sculpture Amy Pilkington. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm. This is Tina West’s seventh solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery and Tucker Robbins’ first collaboration with Robin Rice.
Inspired of a serendipitous meeting between Robin Rice and Tucker Robbins on a rainy day in New York City, this latest collaboration welcomes an exciting new era at The Robin Rice Gallery. Breaking from the gallery’s traditional style of display, West’s photography will be creatively integrated with Robbins’ artisan furniture. Designed and built on the edge of the forest by indigenous people using centuries-old techniques, these products are born out of Tucker Robbins’ travels to remote locations. Whether woven textile, clay pottery or wood sculpture, these sustainably made products are materials that have been salvaged and refashioned into works of exquisite craftsmanship that are truly one of a kind.
Found objects are essential in the installation. Boosting from an impressive visual flow, the installation discovers intersections between the works that can be seen to echo throughout the space. As West’s “Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty” presents an image composed of dark negative space leading down to a snake skin on the surface below, Robbins’ “Snaka Waka Table” is an Acadian side-table found nearby that was named by the Bamun carvers of Cameroon who likened its circular design to snake walking. Together, West and Robbins make for an installation that invites audiences to sit down and connect to the fine art objects in a manner different from what they are regularly accustomed to at the Robin Rice Gallery.
In speaking of her influences, West cites Josef Sudek as an early inspiration on her work for how he made evocative black and white photographs out of everyday happenings. Sudek himself once remarked, “I like to tell stories about the life of inanimate objects, to relate something mysterious.” This statement resonates well within West’s own work as she demonstrates a similar gift for finding the beauty in the banality of things overlooked. Her work also shares a kindred spirit with the eccentric assemblages of disparate images made by Joseph Cornell and the experimental platinum prints of Jan Groover...

Through memory, metaphor, and imagined destinies, “There’s No Other Like Your
Mother” seeks to explore the complexities and constructs of female identity and the
maternal subject as I reconceive my fertile state of being. The sudden death of my
mother prompted the (re)birth of my artistic self at the age of 29 and the emergence
of this series which contemplates my own shifting identity, once firmly rooted in the
domestic tradition but now seemingly unmoored.
Brandy Trigueros is a Los Angeles based artist who uses the narrative space of
the camera to playfully create staged inquisitions of femininity, memoir, and the
on-going transformation of self. After years of working in publishing at the Los
Angeles Times and animation at Nickelodeon, she began pursuing her artistic
practice full-time and received her BFA in Photography and Media from California
Institute of the Arts.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in venues such as the
Griffin Museum of Photography, Foto Forum Santa Fe, Candela Gallery, Museo de
la Naturaleza de Cantabria, Center for Photographic Art, Building Bridges Art
Exchange, Center for Fine Art Photography, Berlin Foto Biennale, Los Angeles
