About the Item

Renée's Dream XV (Days of Heaven) Part of the 29 Palms, CA project. - 2006 Edition of 10, 20x20cm, Archival C-Print, based on the Polaroid. Signature label and certificate. Artist inventory 8133. Not mounted. "Renée's Dream XV (Days of Heaven)" by Stefanie Schneider is a captivating black and white Polaroid artwork that transports viewers to a surreal and haunting dreamscape. This piece is part of the larger 29 Palms, CA project and was created in 2006. In the foreground of the photograph, a woman is seen riding a horse bareback. The horse is facing the camera, and the woman's presence on its back adds a sense of both vulnerability and power. It's a striking image that conveys a connection between the woman and the horse, and it hints at a deeper narrative. To the left and center of the composition, two young men stand. Neither of them is wearing a shirt, and the one on the left is holding a long rifle, as evidenced by the stock of the butt visible in the photograph. Their bare torsos and the presence of the rifle introduce elements of tension and mystery into the scene. Above this enigmatic tableau, a foggy mist shrouds the sky, creating an ethereal and dreamlike atmosphere. Within this mist, there are several anomalies, most notably three distinct orbs floating high in the sky. Each orb is surrounded by a halo-like effect, resembling the appearance of cells. This connection to the three people in the photograph suggests a deeper symbolism or connection between them. In addition to the three prominent orbs, there are numerous smaller dots scattered throughout the air, each slightly lighter in shade. These smaller dots add to the dreamlike quality of the image, creating an otherworldly and mysterious ambiance. Overall, "Renée's Dream XV (Days of Heaven)" exudes a haunting feeling that permeates the viewer's experience. The juxtaposition of the woman on the horse, the shirtless men with the rifle, and the surreal sky with its orbs and mist suggests a narrative that is both compelling and enigmatic. As part of the larger series, it contributes to the dreamworld of Renée, where her two lovers and the dreamlike elements come together to create a captivating visual story. Schneider works with the chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film stock. Chemical explosions of color spreading across the surfaces undermine the photograph's commitment to reality and induce her characters into trance-like dreamscapes. Like flickering sequences of old road movies Schneider's images seem to evaporate before conclusions can be made - their ephemeral reality manifesting in subtle gestures and mysterious motives. Schneider's images refuse to succumb to reality, they keep alive the confusions of dream, desire, fact, and fiction. Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto -Triennale Esslingen. “It was Stefanie Schneider, who inspired me to start the company THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT after seeing her work, which seems to achieve the possible from the impossible, creating the finest of art out of the most basic of mediums and materials. Indeed, after that one day, I was so impressed with her photography that I realized Polaroid film could not be allowed to disappear. Being at the precise moment in time where the world was about to lose Polaroid, I seized the moment and have put all my efforts and passion into saving Polaroid film. For that, I thank Stefanie Schneider almost exclusively, who played a bigger role than anyone in saving this American symbol of photography.” –Florian Kaps, March 8th 2010 (“Doc” Dr. Florian Kaps, founder of “The Impossible Project”)

"Leading Horse", Kansas City, 1997
By Pete Kelly
Located in Hudson, NY
This will be shipped direct from the artist to you or your framer. In this photograph a silhouetted horse follows a silhouetted figure closely as they trek through a field. The use of abstracted figures helps emphasize the emotional aspect of Kelly's main theme: the bond between humans and animals. Pete Kelly finds his inspiration in nature and the landscape. Specifically focusing on, "The reclamation by nature of urban settings", Kelly finds a particularly strong aesthetic and power in the beauty of the urban landscape. "I try to see beauty around me, drawing beauty from ugliness by capturing close up textures of fading paint or graffiti, or by reducing the shape of the subject to silhouette." Kelly's fascination with photography, the quality, and flexibility of the medium began at a very early age. Born in England in 1966, and as the son of a military man, Kelly spent most of his childhood growing up in West Germany. After leaving school Kelly enrolled in a photography course with the R. A. F Photographic Unit, based in Wildenrath in Germany. Although this initial training lasted only six months, it established a life long passion and dedication to photography. Already an avid traveller, Kelly initially decided to return to the UK,
to study Graphic Design at Stockport College, before moving to America in 1987. After completing an Internship at an innovative commercial photography studio in America,
Kelly began working as a Photographers Assistant. Working closely with a range of photographers allowed him to intrinsically develop his own
refined sense of aesthetic as well as develop and master photographic theory and technique. Now working as a Fine Art Photographer in his own right,
Pete Kelly utilizes the most cutting edge equipment and techniques,
painting with photography by compositing and layering photographs...
