In October 1975, Elton John was the biggest pop star in the world. His last two albums “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” and “Rock of the Westies,” had entered the Billboard album chart at No. 1, a first for any artist. “No one had ever done that before,” he wrote in his 2019 memoir, “Me.” “Not Elvis, not the Beatles.”
At 28, he was about to perform two sold-out shows at Dodger Stadium, where the last concert attraction was the Beatles in 1966. John and his manager, John Reid, had flown their friends and families, along with a British documentary film crew, from London to L.A. to help celebrate this milestone. All had gathered at John’s secluded Beverly Hills estate the day before the Dodger Stadium concert to hobnob, sip champagne, and fete the host.
Elton John performed in the infamous sequined baseball outfit at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in October 1975. Elton John performed back-to-back two legendary concerts at the stadium to a record of 110,000 fans, with Terry O'Neill as the official
photographer throughout the gigs.
Terry O’Neill’s candid photojournalistic portraits of creative and political luminaries have included Brigitte Bardot, The Beatles, Audrey Hepburn, Nelson Mandela, and Frank Sinatra, to name just a few, and have appeared on the covers of Life, Rolling Stone, and Vogue. Over the years O’Neill has formed close bonds with many of his sitters, evidenced by the intimate, snapshot-style nature of many of his photographs from the 1960s and ’70s. “I’m a reportage photographer, and I just like fading into the background,” says O’Neill. “The more discrete you are the better off you are.”

Terry O'Neill
Terry O’Neill was one of the world’s most collected photographers, with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars, he photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades.
O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world.
No other photographer embraced the span of fame as O'Neill had, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig.
O’Neill photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they were still struggling young bands in 1963 and pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry. His images have adorned historic rock albums, movie posters and international magazine covers.
