About the Item

W. Perry Barton constructs his colorful collages with a skill for storytelling and a certain amount of play. The medium of collage frees the artist from the anxiety of rendering form, and allows him to arrange, and rearrange, his elements with a sense of playful experimentation. Barton graduated with a BFA in painting from Boston University in 1974, where he studied with Reed Kay, David Aronson and James Weeks.
His work has been exhibited at the Danforth Museum, the Berkshire Museum, the Bromfield Gallery, Studio Soto, and in a solo exhibition at Boston University's Sherman Gallery. He has received a Visual Arts Fellowship in Drawing from the New England Foundation for the Arts and a Fellowship in Drawing from the Artists' Foundation. Barton joined Fenway Studios in 2006.

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?

Cyanotype is a historic photographic processes, invented in 1842 and used by Anna Atkins–the first female photographer. The process involves coating watercolor paper with light-sensitive chemistry made of iron salts. Photographic negatives are laid on top, exposed in the sunlight, and then washed in water to develop into the deep Prussian-blue unique to cyanotypes. Brings a moment of beauty and conversation to any space.
