It is a piece from the "Coal Mine" series, which was shot from above the German state of North Rhine Westphalia's Hambach mine. 240 000 tons of lignite are extracted daily from this open pit mine, which has an area of 85 km2 and descends to a depth of 293 m below sea level. Germany announced its withdrawal from nuclear power following the tragic Fukushima disaster, which increased demand for lignite, also known as "brown coal," which is thought to be the energy source with the highest CO2 emissions.
Since 2010, Bernhard Lang dedicates himself to aerial photography, travelling around the world and looking for singular landscapes impacted by human activities. From the sky, these views almost look like abstract paintings.

Bernhard Lang
Since 2010, Bernhard Lang has been doing aerial photography. He has travelled the world in search of landscapes strongly scarred by man’s imprint, which he photographs from aerial viewpoints using a ultra-light plane or a helicopter. Seen from the sky, these panoramas look almost like abstract paintings. Firmly in the field of contemporary art, his work seeks to incite thoughts on the environment whilst also giving aesthetic pleasure. Over the last ten years, his work has been recompensed by different international awards. “The aerial views show the world out of a different, uncommon perspective. [...] Also, you see the influence, the impact of the humans on the world. That’s what I’d like to show.’’
