In the foreground, a woman with copper hair and a fishtail is lying on the beach as if she has been washed ashore. Her back is turned towards the viewer, and her head is resting on the wet sand. Right next to her, gentle waves are crashing at the beach, creating white foam. In the background the deep blue ocean meets a blue sky, fluffy clouds mirroring the waves down below. The image transports the viewer into a fantasy world and invites them to explore the suggested story further. Illuminated cityscapes, grand beauties, and oceans in deep blue are the protagonists of David Drebin’s spectacular cinematic universe. Although photographs, his works emanate the spirit of the big screen. Reviving familiar tales of unrequited love and mysterious women or developing unique storylines interlocking female and architectural beauty, the star photographer is a storyteller at heart. However, perhaps the term epos is more fitting. After all, Drebin’s visual language errs towards the excessive and glorious. Love stories and landscapes are at the foundation of David Drebin's panoramas, portraits, and neon sculptures.
Drebin's monograph Love and Other Stories (2007) features solitary women in urban tableaux — high-rise apartments buildings and terraces, freeway overpasses and hotel rooms. Dressed alternately in bikinis, evening gowns, and negligees, the women appear to be in various stages of a love affair. They pout while lying on couches and ascend grand staircases; their legs emerge from doorways and car doors, their concealed upper bodies assumedly engaged in passionate embraces. Drebin's cityscapes present sweeping views of famous locales such as Jerusalem, Paris, and New York and incorporate both built and natural features. In “San Francisco Dusk” (2010), an illuminated grid of buildings reaches toward the misty blue horizon of the Pacific Ocean.
