About the Item

Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers. A noted filmmaker, entrepreneur, and environmental advocate, Burtynsky is known internationally for his incredibly detailed images documenting the interaction of industry and natural resources. His images present the tension between beauty and desecration, charting geological and social histories through periods of global industrial change. The landscape photographs document breathtaking aerial views with incredible, almost incomprehensible detail, and monumental perspectives which are colloquially beyond the human eye. Showcasing vast expanses of farmland with winding rows and patterns, the Dryland Farming images that Burtynsky created in Spain have been called "his most abstract and painterly to date." Dryland Farming #25 depicts the arid agricultural region of Monegros, Spain. This region is sparsely populated and prone to droughts and high winds. The title refers to the complex technique used in dry areas to cultivate crops with limited moisture and irrigation. This exceptional work echoes a transformed landscape. Burtynsky allows us to see the painterly patterns of the shimmering silver, purple-white and brown semi-desert landscape. While the image documents environmental exploitation, it is simultaneously seductive in its rich texture and graphic composition. This series in particular recalls the intricate abstract patterns of the work of Jean Dubuffet. Dryland Farming is a series within a larger body of work titled Water. Water is an acclaimed and ambitious series that elevated Burtynsky's practice to new heights as he visited nine countries between 2007 and 2013 to explore the vital relationship between humans and water. Exploring Burtynsky's career-long fascination with the visual and physical effects that a lack of water can have on the environment, the Water series depicts religious and cultural traditions, the realities of climate change, and the urgency of resource depletion. Notably, water itself is often completely absent from the images in the series. Burtynsky's work can be found in over 50 museum collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim, The MoMA, and the Tate Modern. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
