About the Item

Ricordo di Firenze by Giacomo Brogi is a photographic album composed of 50 albumen prints, realized with chromatic reinforcement treatment. Excellent conditions, each black and white photos measures cm 20 x 25. Including the original red cardboard cover with editorial binding with embossed decorations in black and gold, cursive header "Firenze" in gold. Inside in excellent condition: the frontispiece with the header "Ricordo di Firenze Giacomo Brogi", and each print is mounted on grey cardboard with golden fillet windows. This collection includes panoramic views of Florence from the hills, views of urban landscapes at human height and more specific reproductions of Italian Renaissance monuments, artworks, sculptures and interior views. Prints are executed with masterful technique, respecting the laying plans, the perspective and the use of the diaphragms as regards the complex landscapes, in which the architectures are articulated with excellent depth of field. As regards the photographs of the artwork, superbly difficult to realized, the excellent lighting management stands out and shapes the figure on the foreground: the sculptures seem to be detached from their context, allowing us to admire every detail. In urban landscapes, the human presence is very marginal, static and "diluted" into the large spaces. The photographer used fast shutter speeds (for this period) to simplify motion subject as much as possible. This album represents a masterpiece of Italian professional photography of the nineteenth century, usually specialized in urban views and reproduction of artwork, a field in which the Italian photography was best-known in the world. Giacomo Brogi (Florence 1822,1881) Giacomo Brogi was a famous Italian photographer, specialized in portraits and architectural views of Italian cities to documentary purposes. After his death, his son Carlo continued his activity as a photographer and in 1950 the entire Brogi collection was acquired by the Società Fotografica Italiana.
