About the Item
This second half of the 19th-century oil painting, signed lower left "Perret," is attributed to the French artist Henri François Perret (b. 1825). This work is a masterful example of the French Barbizon School tradition, capturing a serene sunset landscape where washerwomen gather by a tranquil lake to do their laundry, their white garments creating beautiful contrast against the darker tones. The painter masterfully balances warm golden sunset hues with cool reflective waters. The clouds are rendered with a soft, feathery touch characteristic of plein air painting techniques. Tall poplar trees frame the left side of the composition, while a village, clinging to the hills, gradually sinks into the distant haze in the background. The painting exhibits a keen understanding of atmospheric perspective, where distant objects appear lighter and less distinct. The brushwork appears somewhat loose and expressive, particularly in the rendering of the foliage and sky, suggesting a painterly approach rather than a highly detailed academic style.
