About the Item

Signed and titled in pencil on print margin. Jack Ridley was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1948. He spent his earliest years at Edwards Air Force in California where he first developed an appreciation of high desert landscapes. His family eventually settled in Ft. Worth, TX, and later Dallas, where Ridley currently lives and works. Ridley has been photographing Texas landscapes in black and white with large format cameras for over thirty years. Traveling to the far ridges of Texas, Ridley sets up camp for weeks at a time, thoughtfully composing and creating timeless images of Texas’ most beautiful natural spaces such as Big Bend National Park, Rio Grande National Park and The Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Spurs sing in the quiet morning breeze as they jingle along with the rhythm of horse hooves trotting across the land. Cows weave in and out of Mesquite as they march on. The distant sound of cowboys whistling and hollering out while gathering the herd draws closer with every passing minute. Before long, an orchestra of bellows fills the air as the herd is sorted into the pens. The morning is no longer still. This photo is a multiple exposure of over sixteen images all shot on the same film frame during branding at the Bell Ranch...
