About the Item
Every evening on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans groups of young men, the Young Fellaz, create a wall of beautiful noise. Playing their battered brass for all they are worth... a raucous, exuberant sound that fills the soul.
This black-and-white photograph vividly captures the energy and spirit of the street brass band in action. The musicians, with their instruments—trombones and tubas—are energetically engaged, creating a dynamic composition that leads the viewer's eye across the scene. The strong contrast and intricate shadows enhance the depth, highlighting the gleaming surfaces of the instruments against the ambient city backdrop. The reflection of streetlights and urban architecture in the background adds context and vibrancy to the lively evening performance. Sparshatt masterfully employs perspective, bringing the viewer into the heart of the action. This work effectively conveys the raw, unfiltered essence of live street music, celebrating the communal and celebratory spirit it brings to urban life.
James Sparshatt's search for moments that capture the passion and emotion engendered by music has taken him from the streets of Havana, to Buenos Aires, to Seville and to New Orleans amongst other locations where rhythm and self expression are essential elements of life.
Palladium platinum prints are the choice for serious collectors of black and white photography. Platinum prints are the ultimate expression of bespoke craft printing. In the hands of a master printer they can provide a unique register of tones and effects bringing unexpected nuances from a negative. Prints created in this way have an ethereal quality with incredible detail, enhanced by the way the chemicals soak into the fibres of the paper. They are also light fast and therefore not subject to any form of fading over time. James Sparshatt's platinum prints are produced by 31 Studio, Europe's leading exponents of this art.
The work is also available as a baryta silver gelatin print or as a large scale archival print.

James Sparshatt
James Sparshatt began his photographic career in the 1990s in Bolivia, working as a photojournalist and editor of the Bolivian Times. James has had solo exhibitions in the US, Ireland, Spain, Cuba, France and across the UK. His work has also been shown at prestigious contemporary art fairs including Pulse - Miami, Art Chicago, Art Hamptons, Slick Paris, Art Market (San Francisco) among others. James’s photographs have been used for many advertising campaigns and have featured in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Tatler, Red, Wanderlust as well as all of the UK’s major broadsheets. He has also written for the New Statesman. “My love of photography developed while I was working as a photojournalist in Latin America in the 1990s. Both there, and later in Cuba, I was captivated by the energy and exuberance of the festivals and dance so inherent in Latino life. Many of my images celebrate the rich and vibrant musical heritage of Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. When I look at them I recall the rhythmic beat of the music and almost feel a trickle of sweat running down my back.” His exhibition at the Royal National Theatre, London was described in the Sunday Telegraph as “a dazzling collection of black and white images”. James has been a finalist in the Sony World Photographic awards, the Centre for Fine Art Photography and The Worldwide Photography Gala awards. He has also won the Center for Fine Art Photography’s International award. James frequently gives talks about his work at photographic festivals and exhibitions.
