Elephants are the biggest land animals on earth and are known to be some of the gentlest and most caring. Joachim Schmeisser captured this species many times. This image depicts one of the huge animals in midstep, facing the camera. The vast and seemingly empty landscape in the background gives an insight into how tough these animals are to survive even under harsh conditions. The Small white bird on the right underlines the elephant's sheer size. Yet the elephant's expression seems as wise and gentle as ever.
