Mitchell Funk
Street Repair becomes Street Art

2020

About the Item

A worker using industrial paint to repair street asphalt inadvertently creates street art. It wasn't his intention to make an artistic statement. His was a purposeful utilitarian effort. Yet his painting effort raises to a high level as he painted four yellow rectangles of relatively equal measure onto a New York City streetscape. From a high vantage point, the eye of art photographer Mitchell Funk recognized it as artful. The four yellow Rothko-like rectangles combined with the five painted white lines and the letter and numbers incised into the steel plates unified the composition. Yet Mitchell Funk did not think that this untilitary street art would translate into great photography. So, he waited. Two hot colored umbelles walked into frame to puctuate the image. Funk snapped it at the perfect moment creating a masterful image of literal street art, Signed dated and numbered 2/15 lower right recto, other sizes available, unframed.printed later, Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum.
