About the Item

This large-scale black and white landscape is part of artist Ron Tarver's long-term, ongoing project, " Land, Sea, Air," that explores the wide-ranging system of wetlands in the US National Wildlife Refuge. It depicts the wetlands of the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region. The refuge, located along the coast of Delaware, is mostly marsh, but also includes freshwater impoundments and upland habitats that are managed for other wildlife. Through his elegantly rendered naturalistic photos that verge on abstraction, Tarver investigates the delicate nature of the ecosystem, the government's precarious conservation policies, and our relationship to these unique spaces. This print is also in the collection of the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA. It ships rolled in a 36 "x 6" tube. Ron Tarver is a professor of Studio Art specializing in Photography at Swarthmore College. He served as staff photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer for 32 years, and his work has appeared in National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker, and Black and White Magazine. He is co-author of the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, published by Harper Collins in 2004, which was accompanied by a traveling exhibition. Tarver shares a 2012 Pulitzer Prize at the Inquirer for his work on a series documenting school violence in the Philadelphia public school system, and was nominated for a second Pulitzer in 2013 for a series exploring dog-training programs in prisons. A recipient of the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts, he has also received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, as well as an Independence Foundation Fellowship, and is a current Guggenheim Fellow. He was named one of the Delaware Valley's "50 Rising Stars in the Arts" by Seven Arts Magazine and is a Center for Emerging Visual Artists Fellow. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in over 30 solo and 50 group exhibitions and is included in many private, corporate, and museum collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Oklahoma Museum of History, and the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Tarver offers private photography instruction, workshops, and photo excursions through his company, Photo-Ops.

Kline Kill Road (Tranquil Landscape Photo of a Rustic Barn in Sepia tone)
By James Bleecker
Located in Hudson, NY
Kline Kill Road archival pigment print on watercolor paper 16 x 13, edition of 25 $1500 24 x 20, edition of 25 $2500 50x40, edition of 25, $6,500 This Black and White Sepia-toned print of a barn in upstate New York was taken by photographer, James Bleecker. The rural scene depicts a pond reflecting the nearby willow tree and barn. The sunlight breaks through the clouds, casting a heavenly glow to the idyllic country setting. Artist Statement: These photographs span the last decade of nearly four that I have worked in the Hudson River valley. While I have photographed landscapes, towns and cities, I have chosen a selection of rural scenes for this show. All are in Columbia County except “Allee,” (Tuxedo Park) and Quimby Farm (Marlborough). While my Dutch ancestors settled here early - Bleecker and Verplanck are common place names - I don't know what, if any, pull that fact exerts. Certainly I'm attracted to the layers of time exposed here; in ancient stone walls, leaning barns, faded mansions and mill towns. The valley exudes boom and bust, love and leavings. About the Artist: James Bleecker photographs the landscapes and architecture of his native New York State. Since 1983 his work has spanned independent fine art photography and commercial architectural photography. Much of his work has been commissioned by museums and historic preservation groups in the Hudson River valley. About James’s work, Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus of The Frick Collection, has written, "James's work is powerful and mature. Rigorously composed and technically perfect, his photographs can reduce you to tears by their beauty." Collections: Berkshire Museum Barry Diller...

Mirrored Lake (Sepia tone Landscape Photograph taken in Louisana)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
sepia toned silver gelatin print, edition 1 of 25 17.5 x 17.5 inches unframed, 30.5 x 30.5 inches framed Frame is dark brown wood molding, 8 ply antique white mat and glass Sepia toned silver gelatin print of a serenely still lake in Louisiana When Time Stands Still. The Photographs of David Halliday Whether traveling to a foreign land, wandering through a neighborhood marketto shop for food, or engaging in convivial conversation with a friend at his home,David Halliday is easily charmed, intrigued, excited, or amused by all that surroundshim. An artful documenter of life, Haliday uses his camera as a tool for recording themultitudinous special moments that capture his attention. Once in the darkroom, heeditorializes his finds, subtly embellishing each image until it somehow evokes thesensation that led him to photograph a subject in the first place. With the exception of a series of platinum print portraits, Halliday produces all of hisphotographs as sepia toned silver gelatin prints. Both processes are highly trad-itional and, in requiring that the artist avoid the use of any color other than sepia, they stand in sharp contrast to splashier modes such as Cibachrome, Polaroid, or digitally produced Iris prints […]. For Halliday, the warm tones afforded by age-old processes reflect his desire to reclaim the past or cherish the present in the form of soft, tranquil, frozen moments...
