About the Item

'1.25.15_2:26:35' 2017 by Susan Wides. Chromogenic print, Ed. of 5, 30 x 20 in. / Frame: 30.75 x 20.75 in. This black and white photo features a close-up view of waterfalls in a dark grey frame. Wides made this photograph close to home in the Kaaterskill Clove of the Catskill Mountains. After scouting for spectacular light, waters’ flux, precise leaf color, and geology, Wides constructs sets for her photographs by streams and rocks in the forests throughout the changing seasons. On-site, her process is one of call–and–response, as she works with the focus levels of her camera lens, the depth of her constructed set, and spatial imagination. It is a single exposure. NY photographer Susan Wides is best known for her color photographs of the urban built environment of NYC as well as scenic views and iconic places of the Hudson Valley landscape where she maintains a studio. Susan's photographs convey the experience of not merely being in a place, but of immersing oneself deeply in nature, almost as a sensory experience. She creates a unique visualization of a site using a language of the lens both with her approach to the subjects of her investigations and the methods of selective focus she has innovated and evolved since the 1980s. Wides' work has been exhibited widely throughout the US and Europe. Solo exhibitions include The Center for Creative Photography, Arizona; The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New Paltz; The Hudson River Museum, Madelyn Jordon Fine Art, Scarsdale; Group exhibitions include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The High Museum of Art, and The Municipal Art Society. Susan Wides is the Director and Curator of ‘T’ Space, a nonprofit gallery dedicated to the cross-inspiration of art, poetry, architecture, and music in the woodlands of the Hudson Valley. Révélations 5
By Patrick Beaulieu
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Patrick Beaulieu’s most recent project Révélations uses installation and digital prints to explore how artistic manipulation can create shifts in one’s expectations of the visual experience. Beaulieu clearly acknowledges his artistic presence in the work through mechanical and digital manipulation of the objects and images he presents. He becomes more than a passive observer and recorder of his physical world; the alteration of conventional photographs implants his voice and vision into the work. This approach directly addresses and contrasts artistic practices which seek to conceal the artist’s hand. His method diverges from those that attempt to present an uninterrupted and uncontaminated record, such as some documentary and straight photography. In using these stylized techniques, Beaulieu makes a palpable proclamation regarding the subjective and flexible condition of images. In Révélations, images of trees, moss, leaves and other natural objects are presented in strict colour schemes of muted grays, browns and greens. Though these colours are familiar components of the natural world that we experience in day-to-day life and in photographs of nature...
