About KAWA:
Buddhist monk Kajii made his name with the award-winning work NAMI – Waves – in 2004; the following year he was named Newcomer of the Year by the Photography Society of Japan. KAWA, a book and exhibition at Tokyo's Foil gallery, sees Kajii turn his hypnotic attention to rivers. Every page of this lucid, crystalline series is awe-inspiring. Ultra-real close-ups of splashes, their droplets like pearls; frozen rocks and plants on riverbanks; shimmering surfaces of rivers in rain; the kinetic energy of underwater waves and fish; night-time lights like electric charges, shooting across dark water. With the variety and simplicity of these astonishing images, Kajii has achieved his stated aim of making the act of photography akin to the chanting of a sutra.
About Syoin Kajii:
Born in Niigata, Japan, Kajii currently lives and works as a artist and Buddhist monk on Sado Island.
Syion Kajii, graduated from Koyasan University in Mikkyo, in esoteric Buddhism, in 1999. He has been taking photographs since the age of 16, and after having served his Buddhist apprenticeship at Koyasan (Mt. Koya) from 1995 to 1999, Kajii travelled around the world, to places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, and the U.K. taking pictures. While working as a monk of the Singon sect in Sado Island, he has been actively working as a photographer. In 2004 he was awarded the 1st FOIL Award for his series of pictures in which he took a succession of waves on a shore in Sado. Following the FOIL Award, he published his first photo book NAMI and was awarded the Rookie of the Year 2005 by The Photographic Society of Japan for this overwhelmingly energetic and spiritual book. Another of his projects consists of photographing rural places suffering from serious depopulation, which was published as Marginal Village in 2009, for which he was awarded The Gotoh Memorial Foundation prize. In 2010 Kajii published his second book KAWA (river) showing breathtaking images of rivers from his extensive travels around the world. His newest work TSUKI (moon/month), was produced in 2011, concurrently with his homonymous video work for the exhibition “Mysticism – Longing for the Absolute” at the Museum Rietberg.

Background:
More than 40 people were killed on 7 April 2018 in the town of Douma on the outskirts of Damascus. The town was at the time held by rebels but besieged by pro-government forces. Civilians claimed they were the victims of a chemical weapon attack.
The assault prompted reprisal missile strikes on Syrian government targets by the US, Britain and France a week later, one of the few direct strikes on Syrian government assets in the nine-year civil war.
About the artist:
Seba Kurtis was born in Argentina in 1974. He studied journalism in Buenos Aires before leaving the country for Europe in the wake of the political and economic crisis of 2001. Several years spent as an illegal immigrant...
