About the Item
"Twilight, Kyoto, Japan" is a unique (one-of-a kind) photo-based mixed media sepia toned print with hand manipulation on hand-edged Japanese artist's paper. It is professionally framed to museum standards in a 2" deep whitewashed natural maple wood frame. The work itself measures 17" x 21" and is framed to 22.5" x 26.5". It is floated under plexi and sits slightly off of the back support so that the edges of the paper are clearly visible and cast a shadow against the support. Worldwide shipping.
This work is part of Asian artist Yasuomi "Hashi" Hashimura’s ongoing "Future Déjà Vu" series, which features abstracted images of historic sculpture, architecture, and landscape from Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and the artist's native Japan. Hashimura creates each photo-based print as a unique work of art, through a process in which he combines darkroom printing with calligraphic brushwork that recalls traditional Japanese ink painting, or "sumi-e." Scholars have referred to this blend of painting techniques and photographic methods as "Hashigraphy," a highly personalized form of painting in the darkroom. Working with photographic emulsion as his medium, Hashimura layers gestural strokes and drips that both obscure and emphasize portions of the photographic image, removing it from the particulars of time and space. By re-imagining ancient artifacts, architectures, and traditional culture according to his own contemporary vision, Hashimura modernizes the historic in his "Future Déjà Vu" series, encouraging the viewer to suspend traditional notions of past and present, memory and history, loss and preservation.
Hashimura often quotes Daisetsu T. Suzuki, a Japanese scholar who wrote extensively on Zen and Buddhism: "Eternity is the Absolute present." The concept of the artist’s "Future Déjà Vu" is, in essence, a kind of eternal truth, where the past, present, and future are all connected. The works in this series demonstrate this concept in the way they take a historic subject matter (ancient architecture, sculpture, or monument), re-produce it in the present as a current work of art, but in such a way that the contemporary work appears aged and historic itself, as if the viewer is looking back at the contemporary artwork from some future point in time as an artifact of the past.
Yasuomi Hashimura (b. 1945, Ibaraki City, Osaka, Japan) lives and works in New York City. He has had solo exhibitions in Tokyo at the National Museum of Western Art; the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; Seibu Yurakucho Art Forum, Ginza; and Mikimoto Gallery. He has also exhibited his work in group exhibitions and delivered lectures in Taiwan, Brazil, and the U.S.

View AllBombay Hook Wildlife Reserve: large black & white landscape photograph w/ sepia
By Ron Tarver
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
This large-scale black and white landscape is part of artist Ron Tarver's long-term, ongoing project, " Land, Sea, Air," that explores the wide-ranging system of wetlands in the US National Wildlife Refuge. It depicts the wetlands of the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region. The refuge, located along the coast of Delaware, is mostly marsh, but also includes freshwater impoundments and upland habitats that are managed for other wildlife. Through his elegantly rendered naturalistic photos that verge on abstraction, Tarver investigates the delicate nature of the ecosystem, the government's precarious conservation policies, and our relationship to these unique spaces. This print is also in the collection of the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA. It ships rolled in a 36 "x 6" tube.
Ron Tarver is a professor of Studio Art specializing in Photography at Swarthmore College. He served as staff photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer for 32 years, and his work has appeared in National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker, and Black and White Magazine. He is co-author of the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, published by Harper Collins in 2004, which was accompanied by a traveling exhibition. Tarver shares a 2012 Pulitzer Prize at the Inquirer for his work on a series documenting school violence in the Philadelphia public school system, and was nominated for a second Pulitzer in 2013 for a series exploring dog...
