About the Item

Laetitia Casta and a male model for the Pirelli calendar, sitting in camping chairs at a caravan park, photographed by Albert Watson. All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. Laetitia Casta, the renowned French model and actress, has been featured in the Pirelli Calendar on multiple occasions, including the 1999 edition by Herb Ritts, the 2000 edition by Annie Leibovitz, and the 2019 edition by Albert Watson. In the 2019 Pirelli Calendar, titled Dreaming, photographer Albert Watson departed from the calendar's traditional pin-up style to present a series of cinematic narratives focusing on women's aspirations. Casta portrayed "the painter," an artist living a bohemian life with her partner, a dancer played by Sergei Polunin. Their story, set in a studio apartment filled with art and second-hand furniture, explores themes of passion, creativity, and the pursuit of recognition. Watson's approach emphasized storytelling and depth, aiming to capture the essence of his subjects beyond mere aesthetics. The 2019 edition also featured other prominent figures: Gigi Hadid as a wealthy socialite, Misty Copeland as a dancer striving for success, and Julia Garner as a botanical photographer. Each narrative was crafted to reflect the individual dreams and challenges of these women, marking a significant evolution in the calendar's portrayal of femininity and ambition. This shift in the Pirelli Calendar aligns with broader cultural movements, emphasizing empowerment and the multifaceted nature of women's experiences. Watson's Dreaming stands as a testament to this progressive vision, blending artistry with meaningful storytelling. Albert Watson is a Scottish-born photographer known for his striking portraits, fashion photography, and fine art imagery. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1942, he studied graphic design at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and later photography at the Royal College of Art in London. Watson moved to the United States in the early 1970s, where he quickly established himself as a leading photographer. His distinctive style—marked by a masterful use of light, shadow, and composition—has graced over 100 Vogue covers and numerous advertising campaigns for brands such as Chanel, Prada, and Apple. His portraiture work includes iconic images of celebrities such as Steve Jobs, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Uma Thurman, as well as personal and conceptual projects. Notably, his 1981 photograph of Alfred Hitchcock holding a plucked goose remains one of his most famous works. Watson’s artistic achievements extend beyond commercial photography; his fine art pieces have been exhibited worldwide, and he has published several photography books, including Cyclops (1994) and Kaos (2017). His contributions to the field have earned him numerous awards, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to photography. Watson continues to push creative boundaries, blending art and storytelling through his lens with an unparalleled ability to capture the essence of his subjects.
