About the Item

Putting aside his usual black and white palette, Hiroshi Watanabe uses color in his attempt to tell an unbiased story of North Korean culture and everyday life in "Ideology in Paradise". From 2006 – 2007, Watanabe made trips to North Korea to investigate the myths that were spoken as fact in his native Japan. North Korea was described only as a country that kidnapped Japanese, allowed police to brutalize their citizens, and left the poor to die of starvation on the streets. Unconvinced by this one-sided perspective of North Koreans he wanted to investigate for himself. During his time in North Korea, he let his curiosity guide him and allowed the process to unfold organically without imposing any agenda. These images are rich in both content and aesthetics, giving the viewer a window into a moment in time, captured with a genuine respect that is visible in each of his images.

For sale an original signed museum-quality Magnum 6x6 photographic print by MARTIN PARR (British, born 1952). Titled "Pyongyang, North Korea. 1997", this Magnum print was a time-limited edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is signed to the back on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. The piece is mounted in a white lacquered frame. The accompanying text by the artist reads: “North Korea is maybe the most surreal country on Earth. Being there is like walking around on a film set. People don’t want to engage with a foreigner, such as myself, but I loved coming across this baby, who was very happy to stare right back at me!” Martin Parr thinks of his photography as an ongoing investigation of human interaction, leisure, and context. Parr is interested in how people live and present themselves to others, particularly in how they display their values. His subjects have included the spectators of a championship polo game...
