About the Item
Kate #13, is from the Kate series, 2002 by American photographer Leonard Freed. This is a signed, 16" x 20" black and white photograph (gelatin silver), stamped/authenticated "vintage" on verso (back of photo) by the Freed estate.
A photographer herself, model and yogini Kate remains complicit in striking dramatic nude poses for Freed. In this image Kate remains theatrical on a hilltop cliff above the sea. Her body shape and form blend with the lines and angles of the setting. Freed captures both playfulness and sensuality of a self-possessed woman.
The photo series Kate became a welcome reprieve for Freed who during a long photo career tackled social-documentary for which he became well-known in the US and abroad.

Artist's Bio:
Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an American photographer from Brooklyn, New York. His "Black in White America" series made him known as a documentarian, a social documentary photographer. Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards and as a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely abroad and, in the US, photographing African Americans (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement is well-known as are his photo essays on New York, Italy, Germany, The Kate Series, among others.

Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed was born on October 23, 1929, in Brooklyn. Although Freed's photographic career is defined by documentary photo essays, such as Black in White America, Freed traveled extensively and captured people, places and things that interested him in locations around the globe. A Magnum photographer, Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America from 1964–65, events in Israel from 1967–68 and in 1973 and the New York City police department from 1972–79, to name a few celebrated assignments. Freed’s coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, although he continued to produce photo essays on New York, Italians and many other subjects. Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 until his death on November 29, 2006, Philipstown.
