ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
Despite only having three lines in the film, Raquel Welch is arguably most famous for her role as Loana the Fair One in the 1966 Hammer film One Million Years BC, and almost every obituary of an actor who had an exceptionally eclectic career starts by mentioning this film and her fur bikini.
The poster and accompanying pin-up photograph were taken by a unit photographer who to this day has not been identified despite becoming such a famous image.
However, there was another publicity shot taken that was amongst the most controversial of Terry O'Neill's prints and was ultimately only seen over three decades later.
The photograph, known as Raquel Welch On The Cross, was an artistic and personal statement for both Raquel and Terry, made at the turning point of the 1960s when the old conservative ways were giving way to a sexual revolution that Raquel Welch would become one of the faces of.
Despite this, Ms. Welch was shy and worried about being filmed in the fur bikini, worried that she might be crucified in the press for it. Mr. O’Neill quickly asked 20th Century Fox to set up a crucifix, and he got to work taking several photographs from many different angles.
The picture is a metaphor for being trapped and strung up by the press, particularly at that time, as they believed she only had the career she had because of her looks.
Ultimately, Mr. O’Neill, being raised Catholic, was worried that people would read the photograph not as the piece of feminist art it is seen as now but as blasphemous and did not publish the photos until much later.

Terry O’Neill’s candid photojournalistic portraits of creative and political luminaries have included Brigitte Bardot, The Beatles, Audrey Hepburn, Nelson Mandela, and Frank Sinatra, to name just a few, and have appeared on the covers of Life, Rolling Stone, and Vogue. Over the years O’Neill has formed close bonds with many of his sitters, evidenced by the intimate, snapshot-style nature of many of his photographs from the 1960s and ’70s. “I’m a reportage photographer, and I just like fading into the background,” says O’Neill. “The more discrete you are the better off you are.”

Terry O'Neill
Terry O’Neill was one of the world’s most collected photographers, with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars, he photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades.
O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world.
No other photographer embraced the span of fame as O'Neill had, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig.
O’Neill photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they were still struggling young bands in 1963 and pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry. His images have adorned historic rock albums, movie posters and international magazine covers.

René Peña (Rene de Jesus Pena Gonzalez) is a self-taught photographer born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. His photography is characterized by stark contrasts, between black and white, subject and background, subject and object. His work often focuses on the duality between human inability to escape institutionalization and human desire for individualism. His interest in contrast is also reflected in his place of residence: Peña currently inhabits the Cerro neighborhood of Cuba which is home to a mostly poor African-Caribbean population, despite having been an enclave of Havana's richest families in the 19th century.
René Peña graduated from the Higher pedagogic Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Havana with a specialization in English in 1983. In the late 1980s he entered the national world of photography and since 1990 became leader of the new trends of Cuban photography, first by handling interiors and domestic situations in modern-day Cuba and later making studies of his own body in aspects such as negritude, sexual ambiguity and the influence of consumerism through self-portraits. He conceives his series on the basis of a conceptual, formal and structurally different analysis of all the parameters established up to the present, going from a brutal expressionism to a distinct homoeroticism, with strong mystic elements, trends from experimental painting, and a certain theatrical dramatization.
He has had important solo shows and participated in group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Venezuela, Canada, France and Germany. His work is part of important collections, not only national but also at world level, such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba; the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba; Reinhard Schultz Collection, Germany; photographic archive Tuscany, Italy; Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona, USA; Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, USA; collection of the province of Hainuat, Belgium; and Lehigh University Pennsylvania...
