About the Item

All available sizes & editions for each size of this photograph: 21” x 26" Edition of 7 32” x 40" Edition of 7 44” x 55” Edition of 10 What makes Burdeny’s Cuba series different from his other work is its interest in intimacy; it offers a rare close-up for Burdeny, whose work typically takes on a wide or distant vantage point. Rather than sweeping vistas, we see the wear and fatigue of these spaces in peeling paint, construction scaffolding, and cracks in the plaster; these are well-lived-in homes and public spaces, some of which are hundreds of years old, and Burdeny frames them as dwellings both used and cared for. But we also see vibrancy, in the light streaming through a window, the lime-gold glow of a well-stocked kitchen, and the intricate moulding along the high ceiling of a sparsely furnished bedroom. While most of the scenes in this series feature no people, their presence is felt in this atmospheric closeness. It’s as though Cuba, for Burdeny, could only be captured in this way, its living history of people just as powerful as its architecture. “Cities are like living organisms,” Burdeny has said of his travel photography, “they continuously evolve, grow, die and mutate. I’m interested in revealing the invisible features of these places.” This photograph will be printed once payment has been received and will ship directly from the printer the artist works with. Dating back to 1935, The Moscow and St. Petersburg Metro was one of the USSR’s most extravagant architectural projects. Under Stalin’s direction, the Architects were directed to introduce the concept of “svet” or light and “sveltloe budushchee” or “A Bright Future”. With their polished marble walls, high vaulted ceilings, and ornate chandeliers, the Metro stations have been likened to an “artificial underground sun”.This underground paradise was to remind its riders that Stalin and his party had delivered something substantial to the people in return for their sacrifices. Burdeny has themed the series around this notion, showcasing his photographs of 20 of the metro stations and various Russian museums, palaces, and theatre interiors. The artist is also working with esteemed writer and translator Rosamund Bartlett, highly regarded in academic circles for completing the latest and perhaps best translation of Anna Karenina...
