About the Item

Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers. A noted filmmaker, entrepreneur, and environmental advocate, Burtynsky is known internationally for his large-scale images documenting the interaction of industry and natural resources. His best images present the tension between beauty and desecration. The photograph was taken from an atypical vantage point as the artist is best known for his breathtaking aerial perspectives. Burtynsky offers the viewer rusted blocks of tin cans as if they were important precious resources or examples of unrivaled natural beauty. The entire frame of the image is consumed with an asymmetrical almost haphazard arrangement of the blocks of tin intended to be recycled and repurposed. The content of the image is secondary to the incredible shades of cinnabar, bark brown, and molten red all intensified by elements of white, or in the center canary yellow. This powerful image is easily contextualized in the canon of history. While Burtynsky is sometimes discussed in relation to Aaron Siskind we can also easily position this work as succeeding Arte Povera (the Italian movement of the late 1960s and 70s that embraced using humble, disposable or construction materials for fine art). Finally this image is also noteworthy as it one of only a handful of images taken in Ontario, in the vicinity of where Burtynsky grew up. Burtynsky's work can be found in over 50 museum collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim, The MoMA, and the Tate Modern. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
