About the Item
In Fidel Santos's photographic exploration, he presents an evocative image capturing the poignant beauty of a weathered Spanish polychromed wood statue of Santa Catalina. Through the lens, Fidel Santos delves into the intricate textures and intricate details that time has etched upon this venerable relic of devotion. The aged wood bears the weight of years, adorned with cracks and chips that weave a narrative of endurance.
Santa Catalina, with eyes cast downward, becomes a silent witness to the passage of time and the trials endured. Each crack, each chip, tells a story of weathered storms and enduring grace. The muted palette of the aged polychrome invites contemplation, drawing viewers into a dialogue with the statue's quiet resilience.
This photograph, serves as a meditation on the transformative power of time and the inevitable marks it leaves on all things. Through the imperfections, a timeless beauty emerges, inviting viewers to reflect on the cyclical nature of life, decay, and the enduring spirit of devotion. In the gaze of Santa Catalina, the artist aims to capture not just the physical manifestation of aging but also the ethereal grace that persists even as the material form undergoes inevitable transformation.
Fidel Santos is a contemporary artist whose work is profoundly influenced by the rich tapestry of Old Master, Baroque, and Renaissance art. Drawing inspiration from these classical periods, Santos skillfully weaves a visual narrative that transcends time. His artistic repertoire is characterized by a meticulous exploration of iconography and symbolism, echoing the traditions of the past while infusing them with a modern sensibility. Through his art, Santos invites viewers on a journey into the realms of allegory and metaphor, where each stroke is a thoughtful homage to the mastery of bygone eras. In seamlessly blending classical techniques with contemporary perspectives, Fidel Santos creates evocative artworks that resonate with both historical depth and contemporary relevance.

Ode to de La Tour's Penitent Magdalen
By E2 - Kleinveld & Julien
Located in New Orleans, LA
36 x 24 inches - Edition 1 of 3 with 2 APs
framing is an additional $525
Photography and acting are kindred spirits in the ongoing series by E2 - Kleinveld & Julien, entitled In Empathy We Trust. The project presents viewers with re-imagined iconic images from the history of art. The collaborators re-envision the work of old master painters beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years.
With subjects enacting roles with varied representations of race, age, and sexual orientation, E2’s revisionist Art History works by artists such as van Eyck, Botticelli, Raphael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, Manet and Whistler. Inspired by the original paintings, E2 hopes to “jar viewers” into questioning their own perceptions. They invite viewers to see these images, and indeed the world anew, using humor, wit and playfulness. In addition, they hope that the viewers will see how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination.
The collaboration began in 2010, after completing work on the traveling exhibition and book project, Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. This natural and man-made disaster brought social inequities in Louisiana into vivid focus. Conversations between Kleinveld and Julien revealed their mutual interest in issues of social justice.
E2 has been exhibited internationally in institutions such as: Royal Academy of Art (London), Photoville (New York), Gemeentemuseum (The Hague), Palazzo Fortuny (Venice), Museum Castelvecchio (Verona), Galerie SIRIUS (Tokyo), New Orleans Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans). The duo is represented by JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY, New Orleans and their work appears in numerous public and private collections, including: Benetton Collection (Treviso, Italy), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Trento, Italy), Hilliard University Art Museum (Lafayette, LA) and The Marks Collection (Houston).
